Flames Rally, Before Falling to Colonials 2-1

Forward Noah Holmes scored to cut the Flames’ deficit to one late in the second half. However, they could not find the equalizer, as the George Washington Colonials held off Liberty 2-1 at the Mount Vernon Campus Field, Tuesday afternoon.
Trailing 2-0, Holmes scored Liberty’s first goal of the season with a shot from 30 yards out during the 81st minute. Continuing their attack, the Flames forced the host Colonials to fend off three consecutive corner kicks in the closing minutes to hold on for the victory.
Liberty drops to 0-3. George Washington moves to 2-1-1.

Turning Point
Fresh off Holmes’ goal, Liberty’s offensive attack was rewarded with a corner kick during the 87th minute. Midfielder Seth Clark’s kick was deflected out by a George Washington defender, resulting in another corner kick. Once again, the Colonials fended off a well-placed kick by Gabe Findley into the box, giving the Flames their third corner of the sequence. The Colonials then cleared the final corner kick to secure possession late.
