LYNCHBURG, VA. – Liberty Flames Men's Soccer Head Coach Scott Wells has announced the addition of Carl Reynolds as an associate head coach to his coaching staff. Reynolds will assist in all aspects of the Liberty program.
"This is great news for Liberty Men's Soccer," commented Wells. "Carl's attention to detail and understanding of the game is one of the best I have worked with."
"I am proud that he wants to follow me on this journey, and I do not doubt that we will do great things together."
Reynolds joins the Liberty men's soccer staff after spending this past season as an associate head coach on Wells' staff at Gardner-Webb. In his only season with the Runnin' Bulldogs, the program reached new heights, posting a 13-3-2 record and an RPI of 35 to be in the discussion for an at-large selection to the 2025 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship.
During the year, Gardner-Webb ranked as high as No. 7 in the country, the first time in school history that a Runnin' Bulldog athletics team has ever been ranked inside the top 10 in a national ranking. In addition, Gardner-Webb placed seven players on the Big South All-Conference team, four first team honorees and three second team selections.
Before moving to Gardner-Webb, Reynolds was the head coach at Spring Hill during the 2024 season. Reynolds became only the second coach in program history to lead Spring Hill to the Gulf South Conference semifinals. The Badgers had two players named to the GSC All-Tournament team, while Izan Quesada Leal was selected as the 2024 GSC Men's Soccer Champion Scholar-Athlete.
From 2016-23, Reynolds was Director of Soccer and a coach at Southern States Soccer in Hattiesburg, Miss. Starting with its youth academy in 2016, he built the organization from the ground up. He grew enrollment numbers from 13 to 500 in six years, and since then, the club has become a regional powerhouse on and off the field, including at the professional level. He also paved the way to a massive multi-million dollar soccer facility for the club in southern Mississippi.
As the head coach of Southern States Stars in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL), Reynolds led the club to a 2024 US Open Cup bid, NPSL Elite Eight, Gulf Coast Conference Tournament Championship and regular season championship with an 11-2-1 record in 2023. In 2022, the club posted an 11-3 record and became the first in U.S. history to achieve a 3rd-round US Open Cup appearance in its inaugural season under Reynolds. The squad was a NPSL Gulf Coast Conference finalist that same year.
He led his team to the 2021 NPSL Gulf Coast Conference Tournament Championship and an 11-3-1 record the following year and led Southern States SC U19 to a NPSL U19 Championship in 2020.
In 2015, Reynolds led Pearl River Community College (NJCAA) to a Mississippi Junior College State Championship and a Regional Championship.
Before Pearl River, the Oxford, England native joined the renowned MLS club New York Red Bulls and led their academy. In his time there, he developed some of the best youth soccer talent in the nation.
In 2013, he accepted an international opportunity as an assistant coach with Sporting De Gijón U15 in the Spanish Segunda B league.
He returned to his alma mater, William Carey, in 2011, joining the team's staff as an assistant coach. In his time coaching the Crusaders, the staff produced multiple NAIA All-Conference, All-Region and All-American players.
In his first year, he helped the team to a NAIA Final Four appearance. The following season, he led the squad to a Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Championship.
His professional playing career was spent with Chattanooga FC, which has had a successful run in the NPSL.
Reynolds' collegiate playing career started in 2007 at William Carey, where he received two All-American team honors. He earned his bachelor's degree in exercise science, as well as both of his master's degrees in performance psychology and child & adolescent counseling psychology from William Carey.
While in his native England, he earned a national diploma in sport and exercise science from Cirencester College in 2006. He also rose through the academy systems at Chelsea, Reading and Swindon. He currently holds USSF E, D and C coaching licenses from US Soccer and a UEFA 'A' coaching license.
Reynolds has two daughters, Lena Grace and Brooklyn.
