
Purdue Fort Wayne Outlasts Liberty, 3-2

Liberty led Purdue Fort Wayne 8-4 in set five before the Mastodons rallied to clinch the five-set victory (25-18, 24-26, 10-25, 25-20, 15-10), Saturday at Liberty Arena.
PFW improves to 2-6 on the season with the win, including 1-1 at this weekend’s Liberty Invitational. Meanwhile, Liberty (4-2) holds a 1-2 record in three matches this weekend heading into tonight’s finale against Loyola Marymount.
Notable Numbers
• Liberty outhit the Mastodons .209-.160 for the match. Purdue Fort Wayne served up 10 aces, compared to seven for the Lady Flames. Liberty led in digs (67-57) and blocks (9-4).
• Reigning Horizon League Player of the Year Katie Crowe scored a match-high 21 kills to go along with 10 digs. Maggie Castleman sent down 16 kills. Claire Pape served up five aces, while Rachael Crucis collected a match-high 17 digs. Madison Gates dished out 34 assists.
• Kennedi Sutter recorded her first career double-double, with career highs in kills (18) and digs (16) to go along with three aces. Rajini Fitzmaurice scored 12 kills, while Lydia Burts registered 11 kills and four blocks. Trinity Watts sent down 10 kills, while Grace Allread dished out a season-high 34 assists. Lindsey Hardesty collected 10 digs.
Turning Point
• Purdue Fort Wayne burst out of the gates in the first set, leading 9-0 on the way to a 25-18 victory. The Lady Flames bounced back with a tight 26-24 set-two win and appeared on the way to the win after claiming a 25-10 victory in set three.
• After the Mastodons took set four, Liberty burst out to an 8-4 lead in the fifth set. Following a PFW sideout, Pape served up three consecutive aces during an 8-0 scoring run. The Mastodons went on the win the set, 15-10.
Quick Hits
• Purdue Fort Wayne is now 2-0 all-time against Liberty in volleyball, with the first meeting being Aug. 25, 2018 in Trevor Johnson’s first weekend as Liberty’s head coach.
• Today was the first time that Liberty has had four players with 10 or more kills in the same match since Nov. 3, 2019 against Alabama, when Amelia Johnson scored 29 kills, followed by 11 each by Rajini Fitzmaurice, Anna Gragg and Casey Goodwin.
• Sutter’s 18 kills are the most by a Liberty freshman since Leah Clayton scored 26 kills in the 2016 Big South semifinal against High Point.
• Six different Lady Flames have scored 10 kills in at least one match this season, in Lilly Kruse, Trinity Watts, Aspen Thompson, Kennedi Sutter, Rajini Fitzmaurice, Lydia Burts and Trinity Watts.
