
LMU Claims Liberty Invitational Title with 3-1 Win Over Lady Flames

Liberty and Loyola Marymount battled back and forth before the Lions claimed the final two sets to complete an undefeated weekend, 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 25-18, 25-12), Saturday at Liberty Arena.
LMU (7-1) went 3-0 at this weekend’s invitational, including sweeps over Old Dominion and Navy and a four-set victory over the host Lady Flames. Liberty falls to 4-3 after a 1-3 weekend at home.
Loyola Marymount setter Isabella Bareford was named Tournament MVP.
Notable Numbers
• LMU hit .320 for the match, compared to .080 for the Lady Flames. The Lions served up 12 aces and 17 service errors, while Liberty recorded eight aces. Loyola Marymount led 11-3 in blocks, while Liberty held a 34-31 advantage in digs.
• Kari Weissberger led all players with 17 kills for LMU, to go along with a match-high-tying five aces. Rose Booth scored 12 kills an added four blocks. Emmelyn Walters registered eight kills and five blocks, while Peytton Bagwell posted a match-high six blocks. Bareford dished out a match-high 35 assists.
• Kennedi Sutter scored a team-high 11 kills to go along with a season-high five aces. Lindsey Hardesty collected a match-high 15 digs to go along with two service aces.
Turning Point
• LMU won set one 25-19 and the Lions staked themselves to an early 9-5 lead in the second set. Sutter then served four aces in a 10-0 Liberty run, pushing the Lady Flames ahead 15-9. Liberty evened the match b winning set two, 25-19.
• The Lions claimed set three 25-18, and then posted a resounding 25-12 set-four win during which they hit .706 (12-0-17) as a team.
Quick Hits
• LMU is 2-0 all-time against Liberty in volleyball, with the only previous meeting resulting in a 3-0 Lions win on Sept. 4, 2015 in Flagstaff, Ariz.
• LMU is the first team from California to play at Liberty since CSU Bakersfield competed in the 2011 Liberty Invitational
• Sutter posted the first two 10-kill matches of her career today, including a season-high 18 kills this morning against Purdue Fort Wayne.
• Sutter’s five aces tonight were the most by a Liberty player since Aug. 24, 2018 against Oakland, when Casey Goodwin served up five aces. Sutter is also the first Liberty freshman since Goodwin (Sept. 10, 2016 at Davidson) with a five-ace match.
Up Next
Liberty will head on the road for its next nine matches, beginning with three contests at the Evansville Invitational, next Friday and Saturday. While in Evansville, Ind., the Lady Flames will take on the host Aces, along with Cleveland State and Murray State.
