Liberty field hockey freshman goalkeeper Azul Iritxity Irigoyen has been named the Play Safe Turf & Track/NFHCA Division I Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced on Wednesday morning.
This is the first national honor for Irixity Irigoyen and gives the Lady Flames four national player of the week awards in 2021. Her teammates Jill Bolton (Feb. 24 and March 10) and Daniella Rhodes (Feb. 17) received NFHCA Division I Offensive Player of the Week accolades earlier this season.
Iritxity Irigoyen, who was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for a fourth straight week on Monday, made 12 saves in a 3-2 double overtime road victory at No. 12 Duke, last Sunday. The first-year goalkeeper from Buenos Aires, Argentina played her best in overtime versus the Blue Devils. She made three consecutive stops in the first extra session to keep the game tied.
Iritxity Irigoyen holds a 7-1 record this season with a 1.03 goals-against-average, 49 saves and a .860 save percentage (No. 11 in nation). She has three shutouts this season.
Irixity and No. 4 Liberty (9-1, 7-1 BIG EAST) will be back on the pitch on Friday (11 a.m.) and Saturday (2 p.m.) for a pair of BIG EAST contests at No. 17 Old Dominion (4-3, 4-2 BIG EAST). The Lady Flames handed the Monarchs their first two league losses, March 6 and 7 at the Liberty Field Hockey Field.
