Beginning Big South action on the road, Saturday night, the Liberty women's soccer team squared off with High Point at Vert Stadium. The Panthers' Kelsey Perrell was instrumental in the matchup, scoring a pair of goals to lead High Point to a 2-1 win.
With the defeat, Liberty falls to 4-6 on the season and 0-1 in conference play. High Point moves to 5-4-1 overall and 1-0 in the Big South.
In addition to Perrell's goals, sophomore forward Devon Jones posted the lone goal for Liberty on an assist by junior forward Jennifer Knoebel. The Lady Flames outshot the Panthers, 11-7, and held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Liberty goalkeeper Holly Van Noord finished the contest with three saves, while High Point netminder Alex Hank made five stops in between the posts.
Perrell put the Panthers on the board in the 16th minute. Bri Jean-Charles dished the ball to the forward, who blasted a ball from distance to put the home team ahead, 1-0.
High Point received its second goal in the second period, with Perrell finding the net again in the 47th minute. After collecting a pass from Meg Kowalski inside the box, Perrell turned and shot from six yards out to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
After making her 2016 debut last Sunday, Jones recorded her first goal of the season in the 90th minute. Knoebel sent a crossing pass from the right side, allowing Jones to chip the ball over the head of Hank. With just 16 seconds remaining following the marker by Jones, the Panthers were able to hang on for the 2-1 final.
Liberty returns to Osborne Stadium on Wednesday to host Longwood at 4 p.m. The contest will stream live on the Big South Network and the Liberty Flames Sports Network.
