
Liberty Finishes in 5th Place at Marquette Intercollegiate

The Flames opened the beginning of a busy month of October by placing fifth at the 2016 Marquette Intercollegiate on Monday.
Despite carding its best score during the 54-hole event on Monday, Liberty dropped one spot down the 10-team leaderboard. The Flames entered the day in fourth place, but finished in fifth with a 9-over par 849 (284-287-278).
The Flames closed the event with a 2-under par 278 on the Milwaukee Country Club (par 70, 7,097 yards). The 2-under par 278 is the team's lowest score of the early 2016-17 season and tied for the 11th best 18-hole total in program history.
Northwestern posted its second consecutive under-par score to win the event by five strokes. The Wildcats posted a 4-under par 836 winning score (283-277-276).
Mississippi finished in second place with a 1-over par 841 (287-277-277), followed by UCLA's third-place score of 5-over par 845 (287-275-283).
SMU took full advantage of the better playing conditions on Monday, carding a 7-under par 273 to leapfrog Liberty on the final day leaderboard. The Mustangs finished in fourth place with a 6-over par 846 (288-285-273).
Individual medalist honors were shared by Northwestern's Ryan Lumsden (69-69-69) and SMU's Gray Townsend (70-69-68). The pair of players led the 66-man field with a 3-under par 207.
Mickey DeMorat paved the way for the Flames, finishing in seventh place with an even par 210 (69-73-68). The junior closed with a 2-under par 68, his second sub-70 round of the event and his sixth since joining the Flames' roster last spring. On Monday, DeMorat carded three birdies, giving him a team-best 11 birdies during the tournament.
Gabe Lench closed with his seventh career sub-70 round, carding a 1-under par 69 during the final round. The sophomore finished the event tied for 10th place with an overall 1-over par 211 (70-72-69) thanks to three birdies on Monday.
Isaiah Logue finished tied for 22nd place with a 4-over par 214 (73-70-71). The junior birdied the par-5, No. 3 hole (531 yards) to get into red figures on the day, but dropped two shots during his final nine holes of competition.
Kieran Vincent fired an even par 70 during the final round to climb eight spots on the leaderboard and finish in 37th place with an overall 10-over par 220 (78-72-70).
Payton Taylor rounded out Liberty's starting five in the field, finishing in 42nd place with a 12-over par 222 (72-74-76) thanks to a team-leading 40 pars. Tyler Abrahamsen competed in the event as an individual, finishing in 60th place with a 23-over par 233 (81-76-76).
The Flames return to action this upcoming weekend when Liberty travels to Chapel Hill, N.C., for the Tar Heel Intercollegiate. The two-day, 54-hole event gets underway on Saturday at the UNC Finley Golf Course.
