Liberty posted consecutive 1-under par rounds of 287 on Friday and currently stands in fifth place at the 2016 Tar Heel Intercollegiate.
The 13-team field took to the UNC Finley Golf Course (par 72, 7,242 yards) a day earlier than expected due to forecasted inclement weather on Saturday because of Hurricane Matthew. Play will resume on Sunday for the event's final 18 holes of competition.
UNCW posted a 7-under par 281 during the morning flight and will enter the final round with the overall lead. The Seahawks lead the 13-team field with a 9-under par 567 (281-286).
Tournament host North Carolina is in second place with a 6-under par 570 (283-287). UNCG (293-280) and Maryland (285-288) share third place and are one stroke ahead of the Flames with a 3-under par 573.
Liberty (287-287) stands alone in fifth place with a 2-under par 574, while North Florida rounds out the under-par team scores with a 1-under par 575 (293-282).
Liberty has two of the 22 golfers who are currently under par following the first 36 holes of competition. The 22-golfer group is led by Coastal Carolina's Alfredo Ruiz (68-70) and UNCG's Jake McGlone (71-67), who share the overall lead with a 6-under par 138.
Liberty's Mickey DeMorat is two strokes off the overall pace and shares third place with UNCW's Thomas Eldridge (68-72-140).
DeMorat recorded four of his seven birdies on the day during the afternoon round to card a 3-under par 69. The junior's third sub-70 round in his last two events puts him in third place with a 4-under par 140 (71-69).
Isaiah Logue is one shot behind DeMorat and shares fifth place with a 3-under par 141 (69-72). Logue, who played on the same course as an individual during the 2015 NCAA Chapel Hill Regional, led the Flames on the day with a combined 11 birdies.
Gabe Lench is currently in 30th place following a 2-over par 146 during day one's competition. The sophomore was at 2-under par as he made the turn during the afternoon, but he closed with four bogeys during his final back nine to drop down the leaderboard.
Hutson Chandler and Kieran Vincent round out Liberty's starting five in this event. Chandler is tied for 46th place with a 5-over par 149 (75-74), and Vincent shares 55th place with a 7-over par 151 (79-72).
Along with Liberty's starting five, freshman Ervin Chang is competing in his first collegiate event. The rookie is tied for 37th place with a 3-over par 147 (72-75).
