Brittany Aanderud's lone goal of the contest in the first period propelled the Liberty women's soccer team to its first win of the season, Thursday afternoon. The Lady Flames (1-2-1) used the marker to defeat Old Dominion (1-3-0) at Osborne Stadium, 1-0.
The victory marks the fourth straight for Liberty against the Lady Monarchs. Old Dominion leads the all-time series, 5-4.
Aanderud's goal was her second of the season and 15th of her career. The Fullerton, Calif., native is now tied with Amy Oberlin (2005-08) for third all-time in program history with 54 career points. Aanderud needs just two points to claim second place in the record books, which is currently held by Silvia Betancourt (55, 2008-11).
Sophomore forward Baylee Gillmore and sophomore defender Sami Santos were instrumental in Aanderud's game-winning goal, as the duo each chipped in an assist.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Holly Van Noord played the entire contest in between the posts for Liberty, making six saves. Entering the contest as the Big South's leader in saves, the 2015 Big South Preseason Defensive Player of the Year earned her second shutout of the season. The shutout is also her 25th all-time, adding to her program record for career shutouts.
ODU goalkeeper Erin Kinz also played the entire contest, making two saves.
Shots were tied in the contest, with ODU holding a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. The Lady Monarchs also had a 9-4 advantage on corner kicks.
Aanderud lit up the scoreboard for the Lady Flames in the 22nd minute. Gillmore sent a crossing pass from the right side of the field into the left side of the 18-yard box. There, Santos pushed it to the top of the box for Aanderud, who ripped a blast into the ODU net, giving Liberty a 1-0 advantage.
Van Noord stopped five shots in the period, including back-to-back saves on shots by Kira Laurento and Iris Achterhof in the 23rd minutes. The netminder's five saves in the opening period helped Liberty maintain its 1-0 advantage at halftime.
In the second period, Liberty gave a strong defensive effort backed by Van Noord to earn the blank sheet.
During the 54th minute, Alyssa Hill sent a low ball at the ODU net, but Kinz was there to corral the attempt.
Later in the 80th minute, Van Noord rounded out her save total on the day, stopping a shot by Madison Hogan.
Hogan attempted to knot the contest in the 85th minute, airmailing a ball from outside the 18-yard box on the right side. The ball bounced off the top of the crossbar, ultimately setting up the 1-0 Liberty victory.
The Lady Flames return to action on Sunday, squaring off with James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va. Game time at University Park is slated for 1 p.m.
