Week 9 NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll
The Liberty Lady Flames field hockey squad fell two spots in this week's NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll, falling in line at No. 12.
The Lady Flames' position in the NFHCA Coaches Poll marks the ninth consecutive week that Liberty has been stationed in the national rankings as the Lady Flames continue to garner recognition.
The 11-6 Lady Flames currently hold the No. 14 spot in the most recent NCAA Field Hockey RPI listings.
Liberty is coming off a pair of losses to Top 5 opponents, No. 3 North Carolina and No. 4 Duke.
On Thursday, the Lady Flames traveled down to Chapel Hill, N.C., to take on the third ranked Tar Heels in a rematch of last season's 2-1 loss in the NCAA Field Hockey Tournament first round. Liberty was unable to avenge the loss, falling to North Carolina by a score of 7-1.
The Lady Flames then returned home to square off against No. 4 Duke at the Liberty Field Hockey Field on Saturday. The Blue Devils took the 1-0 lead heading into intermission but the Lady Flames bounced back and netted two equalizing goals in the second half to force overtime. Duke struck on its first shot in overtime, burying the hopes of the upset-minded Lady Flames as Liberty fell to the Blue Devils by a score of 3-2.
No. 12 Liberty shifts its focus to its final contest of the season when the Lady Flames host Appalachian State on Saturday at 11 a.m. Saturday's contest serves as Senior Day for the 10 seniors on the squad. The Lady Flames have bested the Mountaineers in six consecutive meetings, outscoring Appalachian State 42-5 in the six matchups.
