For just the fourth time in program history and second contest in a row, the Lady Flames found themselves in double overtime. The No. 12 Lady Flames came out on top, 3-2, besting Temple on Sunday in Philadelphia, Pa.
In its last match, Liberty dropped a 3-2 double overtime decision to then No. 11 Boston College on Sept. 27.
The Liberty offense was highlighted by Erin Dombach who collected an assist on each of the Lady Flames' goals on Sunday. Dombach's three assists marks the first time in her career and the third time in program history that a player has collected three assists in a single contest.
With the victory, Liberty improved to 7-3 on the season while Temple falls to 3-8.
It was the Owls who drew first blood in the 29th minute of the contest when Maiyah Brown received a pass from Tricia Light. Brown found the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage.
The Lady Flames answered in the 41st minute after going scoreless in the first half. Sarah Gipe notched her fifth goal of the season off the pass from Dombach. Gipe corralled the pass and ripped a shot into the base of the goal for the equalizer.
Liberty took its first advantage in the 55th minute when freshman Pippa Best recorded her first collegiate goal. Best received the ball from Dombach and redirected it past the outstretched arms of Temple's Haley Mitchell, giving the Lady Flames the 2-1 lead.
Just seven minutes later, the Owls found the back of the net to knot the contest at two apiece. Light scored off the pass from Paige Gross, her fourth goal of the season.
The Lady Flames seemed to own the first overtime period on the offensive end. Liberty outshot Temple, 7-1, but could not find the game-winner. Mitchell denied four shots from Liberty, keeping the Owls in the contest.
The Liberty offense proved too potent for Temple in the second overtime period. Dombach received a pass at midfield and was off to the races with a two-on-one advantage with Ashlee Krulock. Dombach drew the defender and passed the ball to an open Krulock. The Pennsylvania native spun around the goalie for a wide open shot. The senior forward's shot found the mark, providing Liberty with the 3-2 victory.
For the contest, the Lady Flames owned the shot count, 29-12, including a 15-7 advantage in shots on goal.
Liberty's offense forced nine penalty corners, compared to seven from Temple.
Cuccio recorded five saves in the contest, bringing her career total to 178 and tying Ann Jefferis for the most saves in program history. The Colorado native needs just one save to move into sole possession of first place all-time.
Liberty travels back to the Keystone State on Friday with a 6 p.m. showdown against Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa. The Lady Flames will then take on Delaware on Sunday at 1 p.m in Newark, Del. The Blue Hens are currently ranked No. 13 with a 10-2 record.
