Natalie Barr tallied a Liberty single-game program-record four goals as the Lady Flames' offense erupted in an 8-1 win over the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Friday night at the Liberty Field Hockey Field.
Liberty pushes its record to 11-5 overall (4-1 NorPac) with its third straight win over a conference opponent and eighth win in its last nine games. With the loss, the Mountaineers fall to 3-12 overall (0-5 NorPac).
Numerous records were broken during Liberty's 8-1 victory. The eight goals broke the Lady Flames previous single-game record of five, which was set on Sept. 29 against Saint Louis. It was also Liberty's largest margin of victory in a contest, besting the old mark of five, which was also set against Saint Louis. Liberty also set a new program mark with five assists in the game.
In addition to setting the new single-game program mark with four goals, Barr's nine points were also the most ever for a Lady Flame in a single game.
Abbey Basom began the scoring for the Lady Flames at the 21:23 mark of the first half. Off of a penalty corner, Basom received the pass and dribbled her way through the Appalachian State defense. The freshman got within close range and flicked the ball past Mountaineer goalie Sarah Anderson into the goal for her fifth goal of the season and a 1-0 Liberty lead.
Less than 10 minutes later, Barr ripped a shot from the middle of the circle into the left side of the cage to push Liberty's advantage to 2-0.
The Mountaineers answered with a goal from Amber Boot in the 28th minute to cut the Lady Flames' lead in half, 2-1. Casey Lammando delivered a pass in from the left side of the circle and Boot was able to convert right in front of the goal for her second goal of the year.
Barr's second goal of the contest came with just under three minutes remaining in the opening half. The Lady Flames' Jordan Richardson found Barr with a pass and the Northern Ireland native did the rest, lifting the shot over top of Anderson and into the back of the cage. Barr's goal increased Liberty's cushion to 3-1 heading into the break.
Liberty controlled the first half, outshooting the Mountaineers, 11-1, and earning four penalty corners to the visitors' one.
In the 51st minute, the Lady Flames forced their seventh penalty corner of the game. Hannah Jones inserted the ball into the top of the circle to Emily Dinsmore. The senior stopped the pass for Barr who fired a shot on goal, but Anderson was there for the save. Jones collected the rebound off of Anderson's pads and fired her second goal of the season into the cage to increase Liberty's lead to 4-1.
The Lady Flames' offensive outburst continued with 15:49 remaining in the game. Basom ripped a pass towards the front of the cage. Barr emerged from a crowd of players with the pass and rolled the ball by the Mountaineer's goalie for her first career hat trick, giving Liberty a 5-1 advantage.
The Basom-to-Barr connection struck once again in the 62nd minute. Barr ripped the pass from Basom into the right corner of the goal for her fourth goal of the game and her 10th goal of the season.
Following Barr's fourth goal, both teams substituted goalies as Brooke Morley entered for the Lady Flames, replacing Mallory Cuccio and Cristina Ceppi came in for Appalachian State.
Sarah Gipe welcomed the new Mountaineer goalie with her team-leading 12th goal of the season a mere 24 seconds after Ceppi entered the game. Ashlee Krulock tallied her second assist of the season on the play as Liberty tacked on its seventh goal of the game.
Hannah Goldsborough capped Liberty's historic night, scoring her first career goal off of an assist from Barr with 3:41 remaining in the contest.
For the game, Liberty held the advantage in both shots, 20-5, and penalty corners, 8-2.
Cuccio tallied a pair of saves in goal for Liberty, while Anderson recorded six saves for the Mountaineers.
Liberty will play its final home game of the season on Sunday versus NorPac Eastern Division leader Davidson. The showdown for first place is set for 2 p.m. at the Liberty Field Hockey Field. The game will also be the final home contest for the Lady Flames' lone senior, Dinsmore.
