Volleyball Announces 2010 Spring Schedule
3/5/2010 12:00:00 AM | Women's Volleyball
The Liberty volleyball team, winners of three consecutive Big South Conference regular-season titles, opened spring practice this week. The Lady Flames' spring preparations will be highlighted by weekend tournaments at VCU, Virginia Tech and Virginia.
Liberty's spring season will begin at a familiar location, VCU's Siegel Center. The Lady Flames, who played three matches at the facility during the 2009 season, will take part in the VCU/Third Degree Sportswear Spring Fling on March 28. Other teams competing at the day-long event include Duke, Norfolk State, North Carolina, VCU, Virginia, Virginia Tech and William & Mary.
After taking Easter weekend off from competition, the Lady Flames will compete on back-to-back weekends, heading to Virginia Tech on April 10 and to Virginia on April 17.
Liberty has gone 72-32 in the last three seasons, including 44-8 versus Big South opponents. However, head coach Shane Pinder's Lady Flames will feature a relatively young team in 2010.
Rising senior outside hitter Karyl Bacon, a second-team All-Big South performer last season, will be called upon for leadership. Rising junior setter Courtney Boggs filled in admirably for the injured Kallie Corbin last season, while classmate Kelly Haseman made the Big South All-Tournament team as a libero. Finally, rising sophomore Loren Thomas made the 2009 Big South All-Freshman team and will play a prominent role at middle blocker after the graduation of honorable mention All-American Chelaine McCarty.
