
LU Takes Third Victory over Tennessee Tech

The win marked Liberty's third consecutive win over Tennessee Tech in four days, as the Lady Flames won a 6-2 decision in Cookeville, Tenn. on Thursday night, and took a 4-1 victory yesterday in Knoxville.
The Lady Flames struck first, scoring one run on three hits in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. With one out, J'nae Jefferson singled to shortstop, beating the throw to first on the hard grounder. Amber DePasquale followed suit with another single, a slow roller to the pitcher. With runners on first and second, Kaylee West knocked a single up the middle, allowing Jefferson to cross the plate and give Liberty the advantage.
The Golden Eagles put a runner on first in the bottom of the second, when Chanelle Spalding drew a walk, but Liberty catcher Ashley Bensinger tossed strike three to Brittany Spalding down to shortstop Kelly Strickland, who tagged out the runner for the double play.
Liberty extended its lead to 4-0 in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs on three hits and a Tennessee Tech error. Jefferson led off with a double down the left field line, and after DePasquale singled on a slow-moving bunt, moved to third. Then, with West up to bat, the Lady Flames achieved a double steal, as DePasquale moved to second and Jefferson scored.
The Golden Eagles put a runner on first when Whitney Cummings ripped a single up the middle to lead off the bottom of the fourth, but pitcher Katie Warrington threw her out at second on the force after Callie Schmidt had popped out, and Brittany Spalding popped out to end the inning with Liberty maintaining the 4-0 lead.
Tennessee Tech recorded two more hits in the bottom of the fifth. Pinch hitter Melody Christian led off with a single to left, and advanced to second on another single by Brooke Basten, a grounder through the left side. The Lady Flames defense halted the surge, as Lindsey Umberger struck out, Christian was out on ae force play at third and Lacie Coquerille grounded out to second to end the inning.
The Lady Flames closed the door in the top of the seventh. With one out, pinch hitter Bridgett Woods doubled deep down the left field line. Then, Bensinger stepped in the box and ripped a home run over the left field wall, giving Liberty a 6-0 lead.
Strickland then extended her hitting streak to 10 games, leading the team, with a single to right center.
The Golden Eagles threatened a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two runs on three hits and a Liberty defensive error, but the Lady Flames defense held on for the 6-2 victory.
The Lady Flames were led by Bensinger, who was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and DePasquale, who batted 3-for-4 with a run scored.
Stacey Butts led Tennessee Tech, batting 1-for-2 and driving in one run.
Warrington (4-1) gave up nine hits and struck out five batters in the complete-game win, while
Harke (0-4) gave up six hits and struck out five in four complete innings of work.
Liberty improves to 10-5 on the year, while Tennessee Tech drops to 8-14.
The Lady Flames are back in action this afternoon, facing off against No. 19 Tennessee.
