Liberty wraps up the tournament with a 2-2 record after defeating Tennessee Tech twice and falling to Campbell and Tennessee.
The Lady Vols scored their first two runs of the game in the bottom of the first, when Kelly Grieve hit a one-out blooper single into short center field. Grieve then stole second, and Kat Dotson stepped into the box and ripped her first home run of the year, giving Tennessee an early 2-0 lead.
Liberty tried to generate some offense in the top of the second. J'nae Jefferson reached on a hard-hit infield single, and Amber DePasquale followed suit with a bunt that rolled into the gap between third and shortstop to put runners on first and second with nobody out. At that point, the Tennessee coaching staff replaced starting pitcher Cat Hosfield with Ivy Renfroe.
Renfroe sent a message early, striking out Kaylee West, Keely McMillon and Cassie Hendrix to get out of the inning.
Erin Webb led off the bottom of the second with the second Tennessee homer of the game, a solo shot over the right field wall.
The Lady Vols didn't stop there, as Liberty starting pitcher Tiffani Smith got in a jam with the bases loaded and no outs. Ashley Andrews drew a walk, followed by an infield single by Raven Chavanne and another walk by Grieve. Smith then walked Dotson to bring in another run, with the cleanup hitter, Jessica Spigner, up to bat. Spigner then ripped a single to left, bringing in two runs, and advanced to second on the throw. Huff followed up with the team's second consecutive two-RBI single, giving the Lady Vols an 8-0 advantage with no outs.
At that point, head coach Paul Wetmore brought in Katie Warrington to relieve Smith. Warrington picked up her fourth win of the season earlier in the day, striking out five batters against Tennessee Tech.
However, the problems for Liberty continued, as Kajitani reached on a fielder's choice. Liberty second-baseman Hendrix got the first out for Liberty on the next batter with a tough groundout play, retiring Gibson. Webb then grounded out to second, but the play brought in another run to push the score to 9-0. Andrews then hit a long fly ball to right field that was snagged by Law, ending the destructive inning.
The Lady Flames struggled again offensively in the top of the third, as Renfroe recorded her fourth and fifth consecutive strikeouts over Danielle Howard and Jenny Law, and Ashley Bensinger grounded out to third.
The Tennessee bats didn't let up in the bottom of the third. After Chavanne grounded out to the pitcher, Grieve singled to the pitcher and advanced to second on a wild pitch, and Dotson singled through the left side to put runners on the corners with one out. Spigner then hit a deep sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Grieve to score, pushing the score to 10-0. Warrington then recorded her first strikeout of the game, sending Huff back to the dugout looking.
Liberty continued to struggle at the plate. In the top of the fourth, Strickland flied out to right,
Jefferson popped out to shortstop and DePasquale struck out for a three-up, three-down inning for Renfroe.
Liberty had its final opportunity in the top of the fifth, and tried to get the job done with two pinch hitters.
Renfroe had a different idea, striking out Bridgett Woods, Lauren Trentham and Hendrix to seal the 10-0 shutout victory.
Jefferson and DePasquale recorded the lone hits for Liberty, while Howard drew a walk.
Dotson led the Lady Vols, batting 2-for-2 with three RBIs.
Smith drops to 5-3 with the loss, after giving up seven hits and striking out two batters in one complete inning of work. Warrington struck out two batters and gave up two hits in relief work.
Renfroe improves to 9-1 with the win. She gave up no hits and struck out nine Liberty batters in four complete innings.
The Lady Flames drop to 10-6 on the year, while Tennessee improves to 18-5. The Lady Vols remain undefeated in the 2010 Tennessee Invitational, having won every game in five innings.
The Lady Flames are back in action Tuesday in Johnson City, Tenn., for a doubleheader against East Tennessee State. Game 1 is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
