Campbell Hands Liberty 10-4 Loss

Despite back-to-back home runs by Kelly Strickland and J'nae Jefferson, the Campbell Camels handed Liberty its first loss of the Tennessee Invitational 10-4, Saturday afternoon, in Knoxville, Tenn.
The Camels scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. After designated player Lauren Stephan singled to right center, Liberty pitcher Kat Johnson walked two to load the bases. At that point, Katie Warrington entered the circle in relief, and Stephan smacked a sacrifice fly deep to right, giving Campbell an early advantage.
After a 54-minute rain delay, Cassie Webb stepped back in the box and ripped a three-run homer over the right field wall to extend Campbell's lead to 4-0.
The Liberty offense suffered its third straight three-up, three-down inning in the top of the third, and the Campbell bats stayed hot during the Camels' next at-bat. Katie Hinton and Christina Melton led off with back-to-back doubles, and with one out, Robin Leathers singled up the middle, allowing Melton to plate the second run of the inning and push the Camels to a 6-0 lead.
The Lady Flames' offense woke up in the top of the fourth, cutting the deficit to two runs.
Danielle Howard and Jenny Law opened the at-bat with two walks, and Strickland stepped up and busted her second home run of the day to make the score 6-3. Her three-run bomb, which sailed over the center field wall, was hit to almost the exact spot where she hit her earlier home run against Tennessee Tech.
Jefferson was up next, and followed suit with a solo homer of her own, her second of the season, bringing the score to 6-4. With the shot, Jefferson extended her hitting streak to four games.
The Lady Flames put the tying run at the plate in the top of the sixth. With one out, Ashley Bensinger singled on a bunt to third, but Strickland popped out to shortstop and Jefferson grounded out to second base to send the game into the bottom of the sixth.
Campbell didn't let up, adding four more runs during their next at-bat. Taylor McGee led off with a solo homer to left center. After Amanda Miller drew a walk, Webb doubled to left to drive in a run.
Keeli Michael drew another walk, followed by back-to-back singles from Sarah Forgacs and Hinton, and the Camels took a 10-4 lead with nobody out. The Liberty defense escaped the inning with no other runs scoring.
Amber DePasquale led off the final inning with a single up the middle, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. After pinch hitter Lauren Trentham struck out, pinch hitter Jenna Eatmon reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on the throw. DePasquale was able to move to third on the play due to an error by the Campbell second baseman. But the Lady Flames couldn't capitalize, as Hendrix grounded out to first and Howard struck out to end the game.
Strickland led Liberty, batting 1-for-3 with three RBIs, and Jefferson was 1-for-3 with one RBI. Also recording hits for Liberty were Howard, Bensinger and DePasquale. The Camels outhit the Lady Flames 11-5 in the contest.
Webb led the Camels, batting 2-for-3 with four RBIs.
Johnson took the loss in the circle, dropping to 1-2 on the year. She gave up one hit and struck out one in two complete innings of work.
Woodcock (2-0) picked up the win, giving up three hits and striking out five batters in 3 2/3 innings.
The Lady Flames drop to 9-5, while the Camels improve to 4-13-1 in 2010.
Liberty continues play in the Tennessee Invitational tomorrow at 1:30 p.m., facing off against Tennessee Tech. The Lady Flames then conclude the tournament with a game against No. 19 Tennessee at 3:30 p.m.
