Liberty freshman Robert Karlsson (82) sits in a tie for 55th place, participating as an individual through the first round of the NCAA Northeast Regional, at the par-71, 7,022-yard Galloway National Golf Club, located in Galloway, N.J., on Thursday.
Karlsson is participating as an individual and sits 11 strokes behind the leader, Darren Renwick (71) of Tennessee, who finished even par after day one scores were high due to swirling 30 mile-an-hour winds in the Galloway area. There is a three-way tie for second place between Wake Forest's Lee Bedford, Clemson's Kyle Stanley and Virginia's Kyle Stough, all finishing at one over par with a 72. Big South Golf of the Year Zack Byrd of Coastal Carolina notched a 76 and sits in tie for 18th.
Tennessee (296) currently leads all teams with a narrow one shot margin over Wake Forest (297). Virginia (298) and Alabama (303) round out the top four teams vying for the regional championship. Big South champion Coastal Carolina is tied for 11th with a 319, trailing the Volunteers by 23 strokes.
Karlsson will tee off for round two at 8:30 a.m., on hole No. 10, at the Galloway National Golf Club. The Big South Freshman Golfer of the Year will play in a threesome featuring Kevin Lauretti of Sacred Heart and Austin Quinten from host Columbia.
