With victories in the first two games of the series, Liberty runs its conference record to a Big South-leading 13-3 and moves to 25-12 overall. Winthrop drops to 12-5 in the conference and 24-14 overall.
Winthrop scored the first run of the contest in the second inning. First baseman Eddie Tisdale led off the frame with a single and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by third baseman Matt Thielepape. Second baseman Bryn Henderson followed by lining a double down the left field line, cashing in Tisdale for a 1-0 Eagle advantage.
In the third inning, Winthrop added to its lead with another single run. Left fielder Tony Brunetti opened the frame by ripping a liner inside the third base bag for a double. Center fielder Cam Walters followed with a single to right field, putting Eagle runners on the corners with no one out. With the third consecutive hit to begin the inning, shortstop Kevin Nolan dropped a run-scoring single into right field for a 2-0 advantage. Later in the inning, Winthrop loaded the bases with one out, but Liberty starter Shawn Teufel (Jr., Tequesta, Fla.) pitched out of the jam, retiring the next two Eagle hitters.
The host Flames jumped onto the scoreboard and into the lead with a four-run uprising in the bottom of the third. First baseman Trey Wimmer (Fr., Greenwood, S.C) led off the inning with a double to the warning track in center field. After moving to third base on a sacrifice bunt by second baseman P.J. Jimenez (Jr., Yucaipa, Calif.), the Liberty freshman scored the first run of the stanza, as shortstop Matt Williams (Fr., Franklin, Tenn.) doubled off the wall in right center field. Two batters later, catcher Errol Hollinger (Sr., Upland, Calif.) singled through the middle of the infield, plating Williams to tie the game at 2-2. The next hitter, designated hitter Cody Brown (Sr., Cumming, Ga.), put Liberty in front with a blast over the right field wall. The senior's fourth home run of the year gave the Flames a 4-2 lead.
In the top of the fifth, the Eagles once again loaded the bases against Teufel, this time with two outs. The Liberty left hander got the next batter to fly out to the warning track in right field on a leaping catch by right fielder Doug Bream (So., Elizabethtown, Pa.).
After three scoreless innings, Liberty third baseman Tyler Bream (Fr., Zelienople, Pa.) extended the Flames' edge in the sixth. The third baseman belted a two-out solo home run over the right field wall, his seventh of the season, upping the Liberty advantage to 5-2.
In the top of the seventh, Winthrop cut into the Flames' lead, scoring a run without recording a hit. Nolan walked and designated hitter Eddie Rohan was hit by a pitch to open the inning against new Liberty pitcher Brown. Two batters later, with one out, Flames right-hander Andrew Wilson (Sr., RHP, Cary, N.C.) entered the contest and induced Thielepape into a RBI ground out, making it 5-3, the final margin of victory. Wilson then struck out the next Eagle hitter with Rohan at second base to end the threat.
Tuefuel runs his record to 6-1 on the season. The left-hander scattered two runs on eight hits over six innings of work. He struck out five and walked two, while stranding eight Eagle runners. Wilson, the third of three Liberty pitchers in the contest, pitched the final 2 2/3 innings to earn his fourth save of the year. The senior allowed no runs or hits. He struck out two and walked one. Liberty pitchers stranded 10 Winthrop base runners in the contest.
Winthrop starter Robert Lake gave up five runs on nine hits over 6 1/3 innings to fall to 4-3. He struck out four and walked two.
Williams paced all hitters in the contest with three hits for the Flames. Tyler Bream added two hits for Liberty.
Nolan had two hits for the Eagles.
Liberty center fielder Curran Redal (Jr., Moses Lake, Wash.), who broke the Big South record for safely hitting in consecutive games, saw his streak come to an end at 32, as the junior did not get a hit in the contest.
