Liberty (575) staved off Campbell (578) to capture the team championship at William & Mary's First Market Bank Intercollegiate, at the par-71, 6,831-yard Kingsmill River Course in Williamsburg, Va. The team championship was the Flames' first on the links since winning the then William & Mary Invitational on March 21, 2006. That event was also contested at the Kingsmill River Course and, due to rain, was only an 18-hole event.
Robert Karlsson (70-71—141) captured his second straight medalist honor for the Flames, and the Liberty freshman had plenty of competition from his teammates. Tobias Pettersson (70-72—142) and Nathan Schenz-Davis (71-71—142) each tied for second at even par, one stroke behind Karlsson. Temple's Eric Plisko (72-70—142) joined the Liberty crowd in second place.
Jay Calvo (73-76—149) tied for 28th and the Liberty five was rounded out by Preston Dembowiak (78-76—154), who tied for 61st. There were also three Liberty golfers participating as individuals. Chris Watters (75-78—153) tied for 56th, while Jacob Singleton (81-78—159) and Jordan Frye (86-79—165) rounded out the Liberty individuals.
Southern Illinois (588) finished in third place, 13 strokes behind tournament champion Liberty. Temple (592) rounded out the top four squads in the 20-team tournament.
Liberty returns to the links on Monday at Wichita State's Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic. The two-day/54-hole event will be played at the Wichita Country Club in Wichita, Kan.
