Liberty third baseman J'nae Jefferson recorded the first hit of the game when she tripled to right field with one out in the bottom of the first inning. But she never advanced, as Beth Bennett struck out swinging and Kaylee West lined out to third base.
The Lady Pirates put their first run on the board in the top of the third inning. With two outs, Evelyn Garcia kicked off a rally with a single up the middle. She then moved to second when Tiffany Brents reached on a fielding error by Liberty pitcher Sarah Ellis. Garcia crossed the plate to make the score 1-0 when Ashley Weissenbach singled to left field, but the Lady Flames avoided further damage when Brents was thrown out at third on the play by catcher Keely McMillon.
Amber DePasquale led off the bottom of the third with an infield single, and promptly stole second to put herself in scoring position.
After Kelly Strickland walked, Danielle Howard popped a bunt to pitcher Amanda Black, who recorded a double play by throwing out Strickland at first. Jefferson then struck out swinging to end the inning.
The Lady Pirates added their second run in the top of the fourth. With one out, Jada Jeffries doubled to left center. After Sharde Estep grounded out to third, Jeffries scored on a single up the middle by Travonna Byrd to push the score to 2-0.
DePasquale tried to spark a comeback with another single in the bottom of the fifth, but she stayed stranded as the Liberty offense struggled to ignite.
West doubled to left center field with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, but the inning ended when pinch runner Jennifer Pittman was forced out at third.
DePasquale once again tried to rally the Liberty offense, belting a one-out single to center field in the bottom of the seventh. But she was thrown out at second when Strickland reached on a fielder's choice, and pinch hitter Jenny Law grounded out to the pitcher to end the game.
Hampton was led by Estep, who batted 2-for-3, while Weissenbach and Byrd each drove in a run for the Pirates.
DePasquale went 3-for-3 for the Lady Flames, while Jefferson and West each batted 1-for-3. Designated player Ashley Bensinger also recorded a hit for Liberty.
Black picked up the win in the circle to improve to 9-7 on the year, giving up six hits and striking out four batters in the complete game showing.
Ellis drops to 5-10 on the year, scattering seven hits and striking out eight batters in seven innings pitched.
Hampton improves to 14-13, while Liberty drops to 10-16 in 2009.
