Liberty Offense Records Three Homers in Win

Three Lady Flames smacked home runs as the Liberty offense stormed back in Game 2, defeating the Hampton Lady Pirates, 5-1, to split a doubleheader at home Tuesday afternoon. Liberty's season-high home run total helped snap Hampton's seven-game winning streak.
With two outs in the bottom of the first, Liberty catcher Ashley Bensinger reached on an error by the shortstop, and advanced to second when Kaylee West ripped a single to center field. Amber DePasquale walked to load the bases, and Bensinger was able to score on a passed ball with designated player Jenna Eatmon up to bat, giving Liberty a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Flames added three more runs in the bottom of the second, including two on solo home runs from Beth Bennett and J'nae Jefferson. Cassie Hendrix scored the third run, after being hit by a pitch, stealing second base, advancing to third on a wild pitch and finally crossing the plate when Jenny Law grounded out to second.
Liberty added a fifth run in the bottom of the third inning with a homer from freshman West, her first collegiate long ball. DePasquale then reached first when she was hit by a pitch, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Eatmon. She made a scoring threat as she moved to third on a fly ball by Bennett, but remained stranded when Hendrix popped up to first base to end the inning.
The Lady Pirates enjoyed a blast of their own when Evelyn Garcia drilled a one-out home run over the left field fence in the top of the sixth, bringing the score to 5-1.
Hampton put a runner on first in the top of the seventh when Travonna Byrd singled to left field with one out. But Bre'Anna Brown struck out swinging and Amanda Black grounded out to third to end the game, giving the Lady Flames their 11th victory of the season.
West led the Lady Flames, batting 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Lady Pirates were led by Garcia, who batted 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Lady Flames pitcher Tiffani Smith (6-6) picked up the win, striking out a career-high 12 batters and giving up four hits while going the distance.
Byrd (0-5) took the loss, scattering three hits and striking out one in two innings of work.
Hampton drops to 14-14 with the loss, while Liberty improves to 11-16 on the year.
The Lady Flames will open conference play this weekend, as they travel to Rock Hill, S.C., to take on Big South rival Winthrop in a three-game series. A doubleheader is scheduled to begin Saturday at 1 p.m., with a single game on tap for Sunday at 1 p.m.
