The Liberty volleyball team, which earlier this evening clinched a share of its third consecutive Big South Conference regular-season championship, will be the No. 2 seed for next week's Big South Volleyball Championship. The three-day tournament will be hosted by Radford at the Dedmon Center.
Liberty tied UNC Asheville for the Big South regular-season crown, as the two teams finished with matching 13-3 conference records. The Bulldogs received the No. 1 seed by virtue of their two victories over the Lady Flames this season.
The two-time defending tournament champion Lady Flames will face No. 7 seed Gardner-Webb Thursday at noon, in the first of four quarterfinals. The winner will advance to Friday's semifinal round and meet the winner of No. 3 seed Winthrop/No. 6 seed Charleston Southern at 4:30 p.m. The championship match is slated for Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Lady Flames will open the Big South Championship against Gardner-Webb for the second straight year. Last season, Liberty ended the Bulldogs' season with a 3-0 quarterfinal victory at the Justice Center. The Lady Flames, who swept the season series from Gardner-Webb, are 6-0 all-time against the conference's newest member.
Liberty has only been seeded No. 2 once previously in the Big South Championship. In 1999, the Lady Flames headed to Charleston Southern as the second seed and came away with their second Big South title.
Following UNC Asheville and Liberty in the seeding was No. 3 Winthrop, with an 11-5 conference record, and No. 4 Coastal Carolina, who finished 10-6. High Point and Charleston Southern ended up with matching 6-10 Big South records. After a tiebreaker, the Panthers were seeded No. 5 and the Lady Buccaneers No. 6. Gardner-Webb finished 4-12 to take the No. 7 seed, while tournament host Radford is No. 8 after going 2-14 in conference action.
