
UNCA Defeats LU, 3-1, in Battle of Unbeatens

For the second straight day, the Liberty volleyball team attempted to come back from a 2-0 deficit to win a Big South match on the road. On Saturday afternoon, the Lady Flames' rally fell short, as UNC Asheville took over sole possession of first place in the conference standings with a 3-1 (30-28, 25-22, 16-25, 25-19) victory at the Justice Center.
With the setback, the Lady Flames fall to 10-8 overall and 5-1 in Big South action. Liberty is now tied for second place in the conference with Winthrop, after seeing its five-match overall winning streak and 10-match Big South winning skein halted.
Meanwhile, UNC Asheville's victory was the Bulldogs' sixth in a row and 10th in their last 11 matches. UNC Asheville is now 17-5 overall and 6-0 in the Big South. The Bulldogs also improve to 5-0 at the Justice Center.
The afternoon's opening set was the Lady Flames' longest (in terms of points) since the NCAA instituted a 25-point scoring format, prior to the 2008 season. It featured 12 ties and five lead changes, and Liberty earned a set point at 25-24 after Nicki Scripko's (Jr., OH, Fayetteville, N.C.) ace. However, UNC Asheville tallied the next two points and eventually converted its fifth set point into a 30-28 win, on a block by Jenna Dover and Holly Shelton.
The Bulldogs outhit Liberty during the first stanza, .159 to .059, but the Lady Flames served for the set's only four aces. Lauren Ficker was UNC Asheville's top performer, hitting .500 with four kills and two blocks. Meanwhile, Scripko and Kallie Corbin (Sr., S, Beaverton, Ore.) were both productive for the Lady Flames. Scripko recorded four kills and a pair of aces, while Corbin tallied two kills, nine assists, an ace, a set-high seven digs and two blocks.

A trio of Miller kills helped UNC Asheville turn a 9-8 deficit into a 16-12 lead, during the middle stages of the fourth set. Liberty got no closer than three points down the rest of the way, and Ficker's kill wrapped up the Bulldogs' 25-19 set victory and the match. It was the second straight season UNC Asheville has posted a home win over the Lady Flames.
Miller led all players with eight kills in the final set, and her .545 attack percentage contributed to the Bulldogs' .405 team effort. Kelsey Benorden chipped in with five kills and a set-leading six digs, hitting .308. Scripko paced the Lady Flames with five kills.
For the match, UNC Asheville tallied a .240 team attack percentage, as compared with .159 for the Lady Flames. The Bulldogs also became the first Big South team this season to post more blocks than Liberty, 10-6.
