Liberty junior middle blocker Chelaine McCarty hit .400 with 11 kills, Friday evening at the Golden Dome Invitational. However, her standout performance was not enough to ward off a 3-0 (25-10, 25-20, 25-17) setback at the hands of host Notre Dame.
With the defeat, the Lady Flames have now lost three straight matches for the first time since starting the 2006 season at 0-7, and they fall to 8-3 on the season. Meanwhile, the Fighting Irish snapped a four-match losing streak of their own by hitting .337 in the contest. Notre Dame improves to 4-6 overall, and 3-1 in home matches at the Joyce Center.
Notre Dame set the tone for the match by running off the first four points of the evening. In fact, the Fighting Irish would never trail during the match. Notre Dame hit .591 during the opening set, on its way to a 25-10 victory. Serinity Phillips led the way for the home team, with four kills and an .800 attack percentage during set one.
The Fighting Irish got off to another fast start in the second set, claiming an early 9-4 edge. Liberty battled back into the contest, aided by a block and a kill by Ashley Webber (Sr., MB, Lakeside, Calif.). A spike by McCarty (Houston, Ala.) finished off the Lady Flames' surge, pulling the team to with one, at 12-11. However, that's as close as Liberty would get. Notre Dame took a 2-0 lead into the intermission, after Christina Kaelin completed a 25-20 win with her fifth kill of the set. McCarty matched Kaelin's kill total on Liberty's side of the net, hitting .500 with five kills in the middle stanza.
Liberty attempted to prolong the match with a late rally in the third set. Trailing 18-10, the Lady Flames pieced together a 7-2 run. Karyl Bacon's (So., OH/DS, Temecula, Calif.) three kills during the surge helped trim Liberty's deficit to 20-17. Notre Dame then finished off the set with five straight points, featuring three kills and a block by Kristen Dealy. Blocking played a major role in Notre Dame's third-set triumph, as the Fighting Irish totaled five blocks.
McCarty, who has been Liberty's most consistent attacker all season, hit over .300 for the ninth time in 11 matches. Bacon and classmate Nicki Scripko (OH, Fayetteville, N.C.) added five kills apiece, while Scripko paced all players with eight digs.
Kallie Corbin (Jr., S, Beaverton, Ore.) and Courtney Boggs (Fr., S, Marysville, Ohio) split setting duties for the Lady Flames, each recording 10 assists. The 10 helpers were a career high for Boggs.
Kaelin led the Notre Dame attack with 11 kills and a sterling .733 attack percentage. Phillips and Dealy chipped in with eight kills apiece, while Justine Stremick assisted on seven of the nine Fighting Irish blocks on the evening.
Liberty will face Western Michigan (7-2) for the first time since the 2000 season, Saturday at 5 p.m. Both squads will be seeking their first win of the Golden Dome Invitational, as the Broncos dropped a 3-0 decision to UC Irvine in Friday's opening match.
