Video Highlights vs Presbyterian
The Liberty volleyball team controlled play at the net during Friday evening's home Big South match versus Presbyterian, hitting .333 and tallying 10 blocks. As a result, the Lady Flames remained unbeaten in conference play with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-14) sweep of the Blue Hose.
The victory improves Liberty's overall record to 14-5 and keeps its Big South mark unscathed at 5-0. The Lady Flames remain one-half match behind 6-0 High Point, who tops the Big South standings. Meanwhile, visiting Presbyterian drops to 4-13 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
The Lady Flames also continued a trio of winning streaks, all of which originated during the 2007 season. Liberty has now won 16 consecutive matches versus Big South foes and has swept the last 10 conference opponents who have visited the Vines Center. Additionally, the Lady Flames have recorded 13 3-0 sweeps in a row during the month of October.
Neither team led by more than four points during a tightly-contested opening set. The score was knotted on four occasions, including at 16-16, after Presbyterian's Amanda Davis served for an ace. Liberty senior Ashley Webber (MB, Lakeside, Calif.) then recorded a kill and a block assist on the ensuing two rallies, putting the Lady Flames ahead for good. Sophomore outside hitter Nicki Scripko (Fayetteville, N.C.) later put down kills for Liberty's final two points of a 25-21 decision.
Scripko and middle blocker Chelaine McCarty (Jr., Houston, Ala.) evenly divided eight kills, sparking Liberty's attack during the opening stanza. Meanwhile, Presbyterian libero Elizabeth Heineman kept the Blue Hose close with seven digs.
Set two was a tale of two extended serving runs, one by each team. Presbyterian's Carolyn Fabros, who had recently entered the match for the first time, stepped up to serve with her team trailing, 9-6. Aided by a pair of Lisa Shelley kills, Fabros served for five points in a row, providing the Blue Hose an 11-9 edge.
Just four points later, McCarty began serving with the set deadlocked at 12-12. The junior ended up serving for 11 consecutive points, giving Liberty a commanding, 23-12 edge. McCarty served for two aces during the run, while Scripko contributed four kills and a block. Shortly thereafter, Scripko finished off the Lady Flames' 25-15 victory with her seventh kill of the stanza, sending Liberty to intermission with a 2-0 set advantage.
The Lady Flames hit .355 during set two, led by Scripko's .500 and Brittany Pacella's (R-Jr., RS, Reading, Pa.) .600 and three kills. On the opposite side of the net, the Blue Hose were limited to an .074 attack percentage.
In the third set, Presbyterian got off to a fast start. Justine Lanchester came up with two kills during a 4-0 burst, boosting the early Blue Hose edge to 8-4. Liberty's initial lead did not come until freshman Rebecca Warren (DS/L, Virginia Beach, Va.) came in to serve with her team down, 11-10.
Four points later, Warren's aggressive jump serve had helped the Lady Flames go on top to stay.
During a night of serving runs, Liberty fittingly sealed its 3-0 sweep with seven consecutive points on the serve of Jessica Nelson (R-Sr., OH, Tokyo, Japan). McCarty had three kills during the surge, and Scripko tallied the set-winning kill for the third time on the evening, closing out a 25-14 triumph.
For the third set in a row, Liberty's hitting percentage increased, reaching a match-high .387 during set three. Meanwhile, Presbyterian's percentage fell to .049. Lady Flames setter Kallie Corbin (Jr., Beaverton, Ore.) and Webber were the standouts of the final set. Corbin hit 1.000 with four kills, five assists, an ace and two blocks, while Webber had a hand in four of Liberty's six blocks.
During the match, Liberty hit .333, with five of its six starters going over the .300 mark. The Lady Flames also improved to 10-0 when notching eight or more blocks, finishing the contest with 10 blocks.
Sophomores led Liberty in both kills and digs, as Scripko's 13 kills made her the only player in the match to reach double figures. Meanwhile, Karyl Bacon (OH/DS, Temecula, Calif.) finished with 13 digs.
McCarty nearly joined Scripko in double digits, hitting .316 with nine kills and a season-high three aces. Nelson chipped in with eight kills and seven digs for the Lady Flames.
Corbin enjoyed one of her best all-around outings of the season, statistically speaking. The junior paced all players with 25 assists, to go along with six kills, three digs and a season-best four blocks. Also racking up the blocks was Webber, who recorded six rejections for the second match in a row and added four kills.
Shelley led Presbyterian with eight kills, while Heineman led all players in the match with 17 digs. Blue Hose setter Rachel Lewis tallied 22 assists and seven digs.
Liberty will look to extend its winning streak to four Saturday at 12:30 p.m., when UNC Asheville (8-9, 0-4 Big South) visits the Vines Center in the middle contest of the Lady Flames' quick, three-match homestand. The Lady Flames will also be aiming for the 600th win in program history.
Meanwhile, Presbyterian will conclude a five-match road swing with a 2 p.m. conference tilt at Radford, Saturday afternoon.
