
Liberty Shuts Out VMI, 2-0

Amy Oberlin and Tanya Payne each scored a goal and the Liberty Lady Flames held its opponent scoreless for the second-straight match, en route to a 2-0 victory over VMI in a Big South Conference women's soccer contest, Saturday night at Liberty Soccer Field.
With its first Big South triumph, Liberty evens its conference mark at 1-1 and moves its overall record to 2-6 on the year. VMI drops to 0-2 in Big South action and 4-7-1 overall. The Lady Flames have not allowed a goal in 193:24.
Controlling play from the start of the first half, Liberty cashed in a free kick opportunity for its first goal of the contest. Off a kick half way between the midfield line and the top of the penalty box, Maggie Woody (So., MF, Asheville, N.C.) connected with Oberlin (Jr., MF, Ada, Mich.) on the right side of the penalty area. The junior midfielder settled the pass, beat a defender and blasted a shot into the upper left-hand corner of the net at 18:32. The marker, Oberlin's second of the season, gave the Lady Flames a 1-0 advantage.
Liberty continued the pressure on the VMI net throughout the remainder of the opening period, but was unable to extend its lead by intermission.
In the period, the Lady Flames outshot the Keydets, 13-1.
After halftime, Liberty upped its advantage to the final margin of 2-0 at 59:21. On a quick throw in by Suzanne Edwards (Sr., F, Waxhaw, N.C.), Payne beat a defender on the far side of the field and fired a low shot into the back right corner of the goal for her first goal of the season.
The Lady Flames did not allow a Keydet shot in the second half of play.
For the game, Liberty held a 21-1 shot advantage over VMI. In addition, the Lady Flames had a 7-1 edge in corner kicks. Liberty was whistled offside 10 times in the match.
Liberty goalkeeper Ashley Nyholt (Fr., Brampton, Ont.) did not have to make a save in the game. Angela Redmond made eight saves in the VMI net in the first half, while Heidi Breemer recorded four saves in the second half.
The Lady Flames in the midst of a five-game homestand, step out of conference Tuesday by hosting the Longwood Lancers. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Liberty Soccer Field.
