Shortly after Liberty’s announcement to sponsor lacrosse beginning in 2010, Regan Denham was named as the head coach to usher in the new program. As Liberty’s first head coach, Denham led the Lady Flames to their first win on March 6, 2010, as the team defeated Howard, 17-16, in overtime.
In 2011, Denham’s team made a six-win improvement from its inaugural season and also chalked up a postseason victory, defeating Howard in the National Lacrosse Conference Tournament, 16-13.
Also in the 2011 season, five of Denham’s student-athletes earned notable awards. Freshmen Kristen Masullo (first team) and Jen Freymond (second team) were both tabbed with NLC All-Conference honors, while Chloe McIntosh and Audra Menez were each named to the NLC All-Academic Team. Freshman Karis Walborn also earned NLC honors, being named to the All-Tournament team, in addition to later being named to the VaSID All-State second team.
"Not only does Regan bring great experience to our up-and-coming program, but she has also played and coached at other Christian institutions, and understands the mission of Liberty University," stated Director of Athletics Jeff Barber upon welcoming Denham to Liberty in 2009.
Prior to coming to Lynchburg, Denham served as head coach at Springfield College and Missouri Baptist, and acted as an assistant and an interim head coach at Averett and Drew University, respectively.
At Springfield College, Denham led her squad to a 12-6 record and a 5-1 mark in the New England Woman’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). She also served as an assistant professor of physical education at the institution.
In her other head coaching stint, Denham led the Missouri Baptist Spartans, a NAIA institution, to a winning record in just its second year of existence.
As an assistant coach at Averett, just down the road in Danville, Va., Denham helped the squad earn a berth into the USA South Conference Tournament after previously having not won a game in the first three years as a program.
While serving as the interim head coach at Drew University, Denham helped guide Drew to a 14-6 overall record, a trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament's "Sweet 16", and a top-20 ranking in the IWCLA poll.
As Denham enters her third season at the helm, the program is headed toward exciting times. The team will compete at a new playing facility on Liberty’s Campus East during 2012, while 2013 will see a move for the program from the NLC to the Big South Conference, which will sponsor lacrosse for the first time.
Denham is married to Jesse Denham and the couple resides in the Lynchburg area with their son, Caelan.
