Lady Flames Outlast Old Dominion 2-1 on Senior Day

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty (7-2-1) scored in the opening and closing minutes to hold off Old Dominion (2-5) for a 2-1 home triumph on Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Flames honored 11 members of its 2026 senior class in a pre-game ceremony. Those recognized included goalkeepers Peyton Huber and Grace Workman, forwards Halle Engle and Carly Keene, midfielders Gabby Miranda and Avenley Monteith, defenders Sallie Garner, Dani Gubbels and Lauren Littleton and managers Katie Loran and Claire Thoman.
Liberty concludes it non-conference schedule with seven triumphs, including five straight. The Lady Flames improve to 5-0 at home this season and improve their all-time record against ODU to 7-5-2.
Halle Engle opened the scoring in the game during the first minute. She received a slip pass from Monteith and with just a half step on her defender, poked the ball to the far side of the net, slipping just past the Monarch goalkeeper.
Old Dominion stood tall following the score, not letting Liberty record a short for a period of 42 minutes between the 15th and 57th minutes. The Monarchs' attack persisted, recording 12 shots in the game with five on goal.
The Monarchs equalized the contest shortly into the second half. Old Dominion drew a penalty shot off Sallie Garner. The Monarchs' leading scorer, Hannah Morgan, took the penalty, not allowing Huber a chance for a save.
After struggling to create a chance, Liberty's wave of second-half substitutes provided the team with the spark it was seeking. In the 71st minute, Liberty created a turnover in its defensive zone. Freshman Audrey Heustis swiftly brought the ball up before sending a deep ball from midfield. Fellow freshman Izzie Smulik never broke stride, holding off her defender just enough to pop a shot over the goalkeeper's outstretched glove.
The Lady Flames kept pushing toward the goal, restricting Old Dominion chances despite the Monarchs pressing into the penalty area. Liberty ultimately held on, expertly killing the clock in the corner, retaining possession for nearly seven minutes.
