CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Liberty Lady Flames soccer team fell short 2-0 on the road at No. 11 Virginia on Sunday night. The team battled through a 90-minute weather delay but was unable to weather the storm that the top-ranked Cavaliers cast.
The Cavaliers scored in the 18th minute, capitalizing after controlling possession throughout the majority of the opening minutes. Virginia's Addison Halpern received a pass in the center of the field at the top of the penalty area and sent a low ball into the far corner, just out of Liberty's Peyton Huber's reach. The score was the first conceded in Liberty's last five regular-season games (vs. Kennesaw State, Oct. 9).
Liberty regained its composure after allowing the goal, leveling the field and possession. The Lady Flames recorded their first shot in the 31st minute, but were not yet establishing an offensive presence.
15 minutes into the second half, the game was suspended due to inclement weather in the Charlottesville area. After a 90-minute delay, the Lady Flames came out hot, immediately earning a corner kick and receiving multiple chances at net.
The Cavaliers netted their second goal off a free kick. After the initial try rebounded off the crossbar, Allie Ross buried a shot from near for the insurance tally.
