
Lugiano Set to Represent Flames at NCAA Men’s Golf Championship

Following an individual victory at the NCAA Corvallis Regional, Liberty's Michael Lugiano will tee it up against the nation's best at the NCAA Men's Golf National Championship, starting on Friday afternoon.
Lugiano posted a winning score of 12-under par 201 (68-66-67) at Trysting Tree Golf Club (par 71, 7,361 yards) in Corvallis, Ore., May 18-20.
As the top individual at the NCAA Corvallis Regional not on one of the top five teams, Lugiano becomes the first Flame in program history to individually qualify for the national championship.
As a team, Liberty has qualified for the NCAA Men's Golf National Championship four times – 2012, 2019, 2021 and 2022, including a 10th place finish at the 2012 national championship.
The 2026 NCAA Men's Golf National Championship begins on Friday from the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa (par 72, 7,528 yards) in Carlsbad, Calif.
Lugiano is one of six individuals at the national championship site, joining William Jennings (Alabama), Jacob Lang (Kentucky), Malan Potgieter (Louisiana), Jorge Martin Sampedro (UTRGV) and Steen Zeman (Long Beach State).
All 30 teams who have qualified for the NCAA Men's Golf National Championship, along with the six individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play, Saturday through Monday.
Following 54 holes of competition, the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will advance for one additional day of stroke play on Tuesday.
The final round of stroke play will determine the top eight teams for match play competition and the 72-hole 2026 NCAA men's golf individual national champion.
Lugiano's first round of the 2026 NCAA Men's Golf National Championship will get underway on Friday, starting at 5:02 p.m. ET/2:02 p.m. PT for hole No. 1 (par 4, 415 yards).

- Michael Lugiano is the first Flames to individually qualify for the NCAA Men's Golf National Championship.
- During the team's previous four appearances at the national championship event, the Flames have had one player qualify for the final day of stroke play.
- At the 2019 NCAA Men's Golf National Championship, Liberty's Gabe Lench finished tied for 24th place with a 7-over par 294 (75-73-69-77) at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
- Michael Lugiano paced Liberty at the NCAA Corvallis Regional, posting a winning score of 12-under par 201 (68-66-67) at Trysting Tree Golf Club (par 71, 7,361 yards) in Corvallis, Ore., May 18-20.
- Lugiano birdied three of the last four holes of the regional, giving him a three-stroke lead over a pair of golfers from Oklahoma – No. 16 ranked Jase Summy (9-under par 204/70-67-67) and No. 140 ranked Clark Van Gaalen (9-under par 204/68-66-70).
- As Lugiano entered the final four-hole stretch, he was tied with fellow Oklahoma golfer Ryder Cowan, however, the No. 14 ranked golfer in the country posted a triple bogey seven on the par-4, No. 18 hole (454 yards) to drop him out of contention for the regional individual title.
- Conversely, Lugiano sank a bending 12-foot putt on the No. 18 finishing hole to send he and his teammates into a playoff with No. 42 San Diego for the fifth and final qualifying team spot from the NCAA Corvallis Regional.
- On the first playoff hole, the combined score from Liberty and San Diego was tied, sending the two teams into one additional playoff hole.
- On the second playoff hole, San Diego claimed the final qualifying spot when they bested Liberty by two shots.
- As a team, No. 10 seed Liberty finished the event tied for fifth place after carding a 9-under par 843 (282-280-281).
- Liberty is the top-ranked team in Conference USA and was the only team from the league to advance to NCAA Regional play.
- The Flames are ranked No. 80, followed by UTEP (No. 84), New Mexico State (No. 103), MTSU (No. 107), Kennesaw State (No. 114), Jax State (No. 145), Sam Houston (No. 150), LA Tech (No. 153), WKU (No. 156), Delaware (No. 180) and Missouri State (No. 287).
- Following his win at the NCAA Corvallis Regional, Michael Lugiano moved up to No. 127 in the latest Scoreboard powered by clippd national rankings (up from No. 191).
- Lugiano's win at the NCAA Corvallis Regional was the second individual victory of the sophomore's young collegiate career.
