LYNCHBURG, Va. – After helping the Lady Flames pick up a pair of home wins, Liberty forward Ify Nwaobi has been named CUSA Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week for the second time this season.
Nwaobi, whose previous honor came on Feb. 9, averaged 8.5 ppg, a team-high 9.5 rpg and a team-high 3.5 bpg during victories over Middle Tennessee (65-37 on Thursday) and Western Kentucky (60-54 on Saturday).
The native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada posted nine points, 10 rebounds and a career-high five blocked shots against Middle Tennessee. Her five blocks were the most by a Lady Flame this season and were just one off the Liberty Arena single-game record. Nwaobi's defensive efforts helped Liberty hold the Blue Raiders to a season-low 37 points.
Nwaobi then contributed eight points, nine boards and a pair of blocked shots to Saturday's triumph over WKU. Her work on the glass contributed to a 44-27 rebounding advantage for the Lady Flames in a contest where they recovered from a nine-point deficit to win.
Nwaobi leads CUSA in rebounding (9.7 rpg) this season, while ranking No. 37 nationally (sixth among freshmen). She has grabbed 243 boards on the year, putting her one away from becoming one of the top five freshman rebounders in program history.
Nwaobi and the Lady Flames (16-12, 10-7 CUSA) will close out the regular season on Friday, playing host to CUSA newcomer Delaware (12-17, 6-11 CUSA) for the first time. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Liberty Arena, and seniors Lydie Mwamba and Caroline Shiery will be recognized during a pregame ceremony.
