LYNCHBURG, Va. – After averaging a double-double during Liberty's 1-1 road swing, Ify Nwaobi has been named CUSA Freshman of the Week for the first time.
A redshirt freshman forward from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Nwaobi averaged 12.0 ppg, a team-high 13.0 rpg and a team-high 3.0 bpg during a 60-55 victory at Jacksonville State on Thursday and a 64-58 loss at Kennesaw State on Saturday.
Nwaobi posted seven points, a game-high 15 rebounds and a game-high three blocked shots at Jax State. She recorded a key blocked shots and defensive rebound with just over a minute remaining and Liberty clinging to a three-point lead.
On Saturday at Kennesaw State, Nwaobi went for a career-high 17 points, a game-high 11 rebounds and a game-high three rejections in a career-high 34 minutes for her third carer double-double.
Nwaobi tallied 12 second-half points against the Owls, helping Liberty rally from a 12-point deficit. She scored a pair of hoops within the game's final two minutes which each put the Lady Flames in front briefly.
For the season, Nwaobi is posting 8.5 ppg, a team-high 9.9 rpg and a team-high 1.3 bpg. She leads CUSA in rebounding and ranks No. 30 nationally (fifth among freshmen).
Nwaobi and the Lady Flames (11-11, 5-6 CUSA) will play a pair of home games this week. Liberty will face UTEP (10-12, 2-9 CUSA) Thursday at 5 p.m. and will welcome New Mexico State (8-15, 4-7 CUSA) to Liberty Arena Saturday at 2 p.m.
