LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty field hockey sophomore Dara Semmartin has earned her third BIG EAST Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week award of the season.
In addition to Semmartin's accolade, the Lady Flames' Diane Saint Martin and Lou Combrinck have both earned spots on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Semmartin's two other BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors came on Sept. 2 and 9, and she leads all Liberty players with four total weekly honors in only five weeks. She also garnered inclusion on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll two weeks ago (Sept. 16). Semmartin is the first three-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week in the BIG EAST Conference this fall.
This is the first time this season the Lady Flames have featured three players in the weekly awards listing.
Semmartin, a defender from Buenos Aires, Argentina, played a pivotal role in Liberty's pair of shutout wins over Connecticut (1-0 on Friday night) and William & Mary (4-0 on Sunday afternoon), last weekend. The sophomore scored two goals in the victories, both of which proved to be game winners. Semmartin delivered a fourth quarter game-winning goal at home against preseason BIG EAST favorite UConn, scoring at the 53:35 mark on a penalty corner. Semmartin and the Liberty defense held the Huskies to seven total shots on the night in preserving the shutout. Liberty played the final 3:09 of regulation two field players down due to UConn pulling its goalkeepers and a yellow card issued to the hosts.
In Sunday's 4-0 shutout over the Tribe on the road, Semmartin opened the scoring in the sixth minute with her fourth goal of the season. Semmartin and the defensive unit notched their third straight shutout and fourth in the last five games, allowing only two total shots (none on goal) from William & Mary.
Semmartin shares the team lead with four goals and ranks No. 2 on the squad in both assists (6) and points (14). She ranks 20th in the country and third in the BIG EAST in assists per game (0.75).
Saint Martin a freshman goalkeeper, had an outstanding weekend in cage, posting a 2-0 record, 0.00 goals-against-average, five saves, a perfect 1.000 save percentage and two shutouts. In the Lady Flames' 1-0 win over UConn, Saint Martin was stellar with five saves on the evening. The rookie netminder made four of those five stops in the fourth period, including an outstanding diving save at the 51:34 mark to keep the visiting Huskies off the scoreboard.
In Sunday's win at William & Mary, Saint Martin logged the full 60 minutes in net for her fourth shutout of the season and of her career. Through eight games, the freshman goalkeeper sports a 7-1 record with a 1.00 GAA, 25 saves, a .758 save percentage and four shutouts. Her .758 save percentage currently ranks 19th best nationally and second among BIG EAST goalkeepers.
Combrinck, a senior midfielder, paced Liberty in assists (2) and points (6) and shared the team lead with a pair of goals last week. Combrinck assisted on Liberty's one goal of the night against UConn, Semmartin's fourth quarter penalty corner tally.
The senior netted two goals and an assist for five points in the triumph at William & Mary. Combrinck's two-goal effort was her third career multiple-goal match. She scored in the 20th and 36th minutes, both on reverses. Combrinck notched her team-best eighth assist of the season on the first goal of the match from Semmartin. Through eight games, Combrinck shares the team lead in goals (4) and leads the squad in assists (8) and points (16). She currently leads the BIG EAST in assists per game (1.00) and points per game (2.00). Combrinck is No. 9 in the nation in assist per game and 24th in points per game.
Liberty has collected 10 weekly awards through five weeks of the season – three defensive player of the week awards, two offensive player of the week honors, one freshman of the week accolade and four weekly honor roll selections.
Semmartin, Saint Martin, Combrinck and No. 6 Liberty (7-1, 2-0 BIG EAST) will return to action on Friday versus BIG EAST foe Old Dominion (4-5, 2-0 BIG EAST). Game time is 3 p.m. at the Liberty Field Hockey Field, and the contest can be seen on ESPN+.
