LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty women's soccer and Head Coach Lang Wedemeyer have announced the hiring of former Lady Flame, Kailey Bartholomew, as the program's newest assistant coach. Bartholomew returns to Lynchburg following three seasons at the helm at Cairn and multiple seasons playing for Torch F.C. in the women's premier league.
Bartholomew played for four seasons as a midfielder for the Lady Flames (2016-19), playing three seasons under Wedemeyer. In her senior season, the midfielder netted two goals and four assists with eight points, the third most on the team. In four seasons at Liberty, she played in 54 games, totaling two goals and five assists.
"We are so excited to welcome Kailey back to Liberty. She was a sophomore on the first team I coached here in 2017 and was one of the first players to buy into the culture and philosophies that would eventually take the program to new heights," Wedemeyer said. "It has been wonderful to see her delve into the coaching world at the high school level and with Cairn. Her love of Liberty, her passion for the game, and the experience she has gained coaching over these last few years will enable her to be a great asset for our players and program."
After Liberty, Bartholomew played for multiple seasons for Torch F.C., a sports ministry that participates in the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL).
Bartholomew began her coaching career serving as the Head Girls' Soccer Coach at Faith Christian Academy out of the Bicentennial Athletic League (BAL). Across her tenure, the Lions secured the PIAA District I Champions and reached the PIAA State quarterfinals. Bartholomew was honored as the BAL Coach of the Year following the season.
Cairn announced Bartholomew as its head coach prior to the 2022 season. She totaled a 23-22-6 record across three seasons. She guided the Highlanders to a 9-6-5 record in her first season, guiding a Defensive Player of the Year selection and four all-conference honorees. In 2023, she led Cairn to a finish in the United East Divisional Final with a 7-6-4 mark, garnering a second Defensive Player of the Year award and six all-conference mentions. She finished her Cairn tenure with a 5-9-1 record and an appearance in the United East First Round.
