AMHERST, Va. – Liberty's Ike Joy and the rest of the NCAA Amherst Regional field had a long and wet day at the course on Monday, but they were able to battle the elements to stay on the course and keep the event moving along.
With the known forecast for the Amherst area on Monday and Tuesday, NCAA Regional officials made the call on Sunday morning to start competitive play at the regional event directly after Sunday's practice round.
Roughly 15 of the 25 groupings completed Round 1 of the event on Sunday under ideal spring-like conditions at the Poplar Grove Golf Club (par 70, 7,212 yards).
Joy was part of the group that returned to the course early Monday morning to resume Round 1, which concluded at 9 a.m. Following the first 18 holes of the event, Joy was tied for 63rd place after firing a 5-over par 75.
The redshirt junior got off to a rough start at the Regional, carding one birdie and four bogeys during his first six holes of play.
Round 2 got underway at 9:45 a.m. and most teams were on the course before the weather started to become challenging around Noon. Despite some rain showers coming down hard at times, NCAA Regional officials continued to monitor the course and deemed it playable.
During Round 1 of the event, the course played at a scoring average of 72.00. However, the weather forced higher scores in Round 2 with the course playing at a scoring average of 73.17.
Joy played well during the first half of Round 2, which included a second birdie at the Regional at the par-5, No. 3 hole (603 yards).
The native of Denver, N.C., was sitting at 1-under par through 11 holes; however, he went bogey-bogey-birdie-bogey-bogey over the next five holes to end the day with a 2-over par 72.
Entering the final round, Joy is currently tied for 47th place with an overall 7-over par 147 (75-72).
Only two teams in the NCAA Amherst Regional field will enter the final round in red figures. No. 30 Tennessee leads the 13-team field with a 4-under par 556 (271-285), while No. 18 Vanderbilt is one shot back with a 3-under par 557 (278-279).
No. 7 Oklahoma is in third place with a 1-over par 561 (276-285). No. 31 Arizona is in fourth place with a 4-over par 564 (286-278) and FGCU holds down the coveted fifth-place spot with a 5-over par 565 (282-283).
The top five teams and top individual from a non-advancing team will advance to the 2025 NCAA Men's Golf Championship, held at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif., May 23-28.
Round 3 is currently scheduled to resume at 9 a.m. EST at the Poplar Grove Golf Club. However, more rain is expected overnight and NCAA Regional officials will determine the best course of action in the morning.
