
WKU Edges Liberty 4-2

LYNCHBURG, VA. – The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers squeezed past the Liberty Flames 4-2 in the middle game of their CUSA series at Worthington Field at Liberty Baseball Stadium on Saturday.
After the Flames stranded runners at second and third in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Hilltoppers broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the eighth, cashing in a lead-off double by center fielder Ryan Wideman with a squeeze bunt by catcher Camden Ross. WKU added an insurance run in the ninth to slip past Liberty for the second straight day.
In the bottom of the ninth with two outs, the Flames brought the tying run to the plate. However, Cal Higgins entered the game and got the only batter he faced to fly out to end the contest.
Flames' right-hander Ben Blair and Hilltoppers' right-hander Dawson Hall dueled through the first five innings, each allowing two runs.
Right fielder Camden Troyer led Liberty with two hits and scored a run in the game. Flames third baseman Landon Scilley tied the game in the fourth inning with a two-out, two-run double.
Liberty falls to 5-6 in Conference USA and 22-13 overall. WKU takes the three-game series with wins in the first two games. The Hilltoppers move to 8-3 in CUSA and 30-5 overall.
