LYNCHBURG, Va. – Goalkeeper Rachel Hines was all over the field on Saturday, earning recognition as the Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Hines receives her second ASUN Defensive Player of the Week honor of the season.
The sophomore made 14 saves on 22 shots on Saturday in a 15-7 win at defending champion, Coastal Carolina. She earned a career-high seven ground balls and four caused turnovers, along with her first career assist. In the fourth quarter, the sophomore found herself defending in Liberty's attacking zone. Instead of retreating, Hines stepped in front of a pass from her counterpart and dished a pass to Ava Rajala who earned Hines the assist with the score.
The Defensive Player of the Week honor is Liberty's seventh ASUN weekly award of the season out of a possible 14 the conference has announced this spring. The recognition is the team's fourth Defensive Player of the Week award.
The goalkeeper is currently tied for third on Liberty with 21 ground balls this spring. Hines has earned a .388 save percentage this season on 205 shots faced, securing a 13.27 goals-against average. The sophomore has made every start this season for the Lady Flames.
Liberty (7-3, 2-0 ASUN) and Hines prepare for a two-game road trip, taking on Queens (3-7, 0-0 ASUN) on Saturday and facing Louisville (5-6) on Tuesday. Saturday's contest is set for 1 p.m. from the Queens Sports Complex in Charlotte, N.C. and will be broadcast live on ESPN+. Tuesday's tilt is scheduled for 12 p.m. from the UofL Lacrosse Stadium in Louisville, Ky.
