Weather Report
Sunny skies are forecasted for both days of competition. Friday's high temperature is expected to top out in the low 60s, while Saturday could reach 70.
Looking Back at Last Year
The Lady Flames took home the 2024 Bob Davidson Team Challenge women's trophy with 120 points, holding off High Point (114) and East Carolina (108). Meanwhile, the Liberty men's squad totaled 64 points for fifth place of 10 men's teams.
Liberty set two program records during the meet, including the women's 100 hurdles (Indea Cartwright – 13.53) and men's 100 (Omari Lewis – 10.18). Katie Urbine also pole vaulted a Liberty freshman-record 13-5.75 early in a season which culminated as an All-American.
Back to Work
A week after earning second team All-America honors with a 12th-place pentathlon finish at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships, Meredith Engle will get her outdoor campaign started. She is entered in the women's 100 hurdles and javelin.
Fresh Faces
A trio of talented transfers are slated to make their Liberty track & field debuts in the sprints and relays on Saturday. They include Akilah Lewis (Ole Miss), Mahogany Mobley (Kentucky) and Troy McKnight (Little Rock).
Baton Battles
Both Liberty 4 x 100 relay teams possess considerable potential for the upcoming season.
Akilah Lewis joins the women's squad following a memorable 2024 which saw her help Ole Miss win the NCAA women's 4 x 100 national title and race for Trinidad and Tobago's 4 x 100 squad in the Paris Olympics. She will join countrywoman Reese Webster (No. 2 in program history with an 11.24 100), women's 100 hurdles program record holder Indea Cartwright (13.11) and Kentucky transfer Mahogany Mobley.
On the men's side, World Championships 4 x 100 relay veterans Omari Lewis and Revell Webster return to the lineup. They will team up with first-year Flames Troy McKnight (10.30 personal best) and Eddy Vu (10.28).
Sizing Up the Steeplechase
The steeplechase played a key role in the Lady Flames' 2024 CUSA outdoor team title. All-American Calli Doan won the event, leading a 25-point haul.
Doan has since graduated and joined Liberty's coaching staff, but this is still projected to be a strong event for the Lady Flames in 2025. Katrina Schlenker and Sophia Park placed second and fifth, respectively, at the CUSA Championship. They are both slated to contest the race on Saturday, along with first-time steeplers Marie Hostetler, Katie Sigerud, Raini Mayo and Sophia Mast.
Let it Fly!
Many Liberty discus throwers have recorded personal bests at High Point over the years, and the Flames have a talented group set to compete Saturday afternoon.
On the men's side, returning NCAA Division I East First Rounds qualifiers Christian Hicks and Beau Backes will be joined by freshman Trevor Veenstra, the 2023 Iowa 2A state champion and a two-time Drake Relays runner-up.
Sofia Mojica returns to action for the Lady Flames after heaving the discus a personal-best 163-3 during a redshirt season in 2024. Freshman teammate Bethany Tate was the 2023 AAU Junior Olympics 17-18 national champion and reached 147-5 in high school.
Up Next
Liberty will send athletes to a pair of meets next week, including the Raleigh Relays (March 27-29 at NC State) and Dr. Jack M. Toms Alumni Invitational (March 28-29 at the University of Lynchburg).
