LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Liberty women's soccer team received the United Soccer Coaches Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award for the third straight year, the organization announced. The Lady Flames were recognized as one of 64 men's and women's teams to receive the honor which highlights teams that exhibit fair play, sporting behavior and adherence to the laws of the game.
The Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award contains four levels, Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze. Liberty qualified for the Bronze Award. The awards are determined by the amount of yellow and red cards received throughout the season divided by the number of games played. A total of 32 teams received the Bronze Award which is presented to teams that accumulate a percentage of cards ranging from 31-50%. The Lady Flames finished the 2024 season with nine yellow cards and one red card for a percentage of .476.
The Lady Flames previously qualified for the award in its two most recent seasons. The Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award is one of three qualifications for programs to receive the United Soccer Coaches Team Pinnacle Award, an award that Liberty has also received over the past two years (2022, 23). Programs must also be awarded the 2024 Team Academic Award and finish with a winning percentage of .750 or higher (.810, 2024).
On the Team Pinnacle Award, head coach Lang Wedemeyer said, "Receiving the Pinnacle Award is a great honor and a huge testament to the hard work and integrity displayed, every day, by our student-athletes."
Liberty received its most recent 2023 Team Pinnacle Award on Oct. 21 and was just one of two Division I women's soccer programs to receive the honor along with Stanford.
