Liberty to Resume Indoor Season at The Burg Open

LYNCHBURG, Va. – After more than a month away from competition, the Liberty men's and women's indoor track & field teams will resume their 2024-25 season at The Burg Open on Friday. The one-day competition will be hosted by the University of Lynchburg at the Brant Tolsma Indoor Track at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.
The meet will begin at 9 a.m. with the women's weight throw and men's long jump. Running events will get started at 11 a.m. with the men's 5K. The Flames' first event of the day will be the men's 60 hurdles prelims at 11:35 a.m.

Fresh Faces
Six athletes are slated to make their Liberty track & field debuts on Friday, including the women's trio of Shania Adderley (4 x 400), Marianah Scott (4 x 400) and Julia Seeley (800) and the men's grouping of Elijah Sherard (400), Eddy Vu (400) and Bohdan Walchle (400).
Adderley was part of the Bahamas' relay pool for the mixed 4 x 400 at the Paris Olympics at the age of 16.
Going the Extra Mile
A year ago, The Burg Open men's mile was won in a time of 4:14.69. That clocking will be challenged Friday at 12:50, thanks to Liberty distance standouts Kyle Harkabus, Nathan Moore, Jack Cottrell, Will Jefferson and Dale Hall and Lynchburg's Sam Llaneza, Chasen Hunt and Tor Hotung-Davidsen.
Harkabus captured CUSA titles in the indoor mile and outdoor 1,500 a year ago. Jefferson owns the Liberty freshman record of 4:06.63 from the 2021-22 season.
A Look Back at Last Year
The Burg Open's inaugural edition took place on Jan. 12, 2024 at the Brant Tolsma Indoor Track at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.
Warren Barrett made a successful return to competition following an injury. He won the men's shot put with ease at 61-10.5, kick-starting a season which culminated with an NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships appearance in the event.
Then freshman Eva Whiteman won the women's high jump in just her second collegiate meet, clearing 5-5.
Conference USA Contenders
Liberty's second season as a Conference USA member will culminate with the 2025 CUSA Indoor Track & Field Championships, Feb. 28-March 1 at the Brant Tolsma Indoor Track at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex. Through the early stages of the season, Liberty ranks No. 1 in the following events:
Women's 800 – Meredith Engle – 2:20.93
Women's 3K – Allie Zealand – 9:07.33
Women's 5K – Adelyn Fairley – 15:58.74
Women's Triple Jump – Stephanie Robson – 39-1.25
Women's High Jump – Meredith Engle and Eva Whiteman – 5-7
Women's Pole Vault – Katie Urbine – 12-11.5
Pentathlon – Meredith Engle – 3,989
Men's High Jump – Gabriel Willis – 6-8
Heptathlon – Gabriel Willis – 4,977
Among the Nation's Elite
At season's end, the nation's top 16 performers in each event will qualify to the 2025 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships. The meet is scheduled for March 14-15 in Virginia Beach, Va.
The following Flames currently rank among the top 16 in their respective events:
No. 3 – Meredith Engle – Pentathlon – 3,989
No. 11 – Patasha Bryan – Pentathlon – 3,762
No. 14 – Allie Zealand – Women's 3K – 9:07.33
Both Engle and Zealand's marks set new Liberty records.
