Miranda’s Two Goals Lead Liberty to 3-1 Victory Over High Point in Season Opener

Halle Engle earned the first goal of the night on a free kick that glanced off the Panthers' goalkeepers' gloves. She later added an assist to help guide Liberty to its second straight victory in a season opener. Liberty topped VCU 2-1 on the road to open the 2023 season.
Miranda, with her first goal as a Lady Flame, increased the advantage to 2-0 in the second half, depositing a pass from Engle who reached the end line. Engle found Miranda in the center of the box and slid it past the keeper.
High Point narrowed the Lady Flames' lead to 2-1 with a cross from Megan Garmey. The pass was inserted past Liberty goalkeeper Peyton Huber from the Panthers' Lindsey DeHaven.
With under 10 minutes remaining, Ivy Garner found Claire Valentine streaking down the sideline. Valentine lobbed a ball that the goalkeeper deflected right to Miranda. She settled the save with one touch and struck the ball from the center of the field to gain the 3-1 lead.
Liberty prepares for its home opener against Old Dominion on Sunday. Kick off is set for 1 p.m. from Osborne Stadium. The contest will be streamed on ESPN+

Thoughts from Head Coach Lang Wedemeyer
"It was pretty scrappy. I thought we started really well, created some good chances. We probably could have been up 2-0 after the first 10 minutes. We had eight new starters that were in this game compared to last year's CUSA Championship. I thought it was a really good win for the opener."
On Halle Engle's Return
"We certainly missed Halle a lot last year and her dynamic ability to go 1v1. She was dangerous all night long and created a lot of havoc for the other team. Her free kick was beautiful."
On Gabby Miranda's two scores
"It was really good to see Gabby come in and score two goals. She had a really good spring season so its nice to see her pick up where she left off."
