LYNCHBURG, Va. – Former Liberty Flames pitcher Fraser Ellard made his major league debut with the Chicago White Sox in a 4-3 loss to the Kansas City Royals, this evening at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago.
Ellard, who was added to the White Sox's 26-man roster earlier today, made his debut in the top of the eighth inning, facing three batters in relief of right-hander Jonathan Cannon.
Ellard becomes the seventh former Liberty Flame to reach the majors and the first since Ryan Cordell who debuted with the White Sox in September of 2019. The left-hander joins former Flames Ryan Cordell (2018-20), Ian Parmley (2017), Doug Brady (1995), Randy Tomlin (1986-88), Sid Bream (1979-81) and Lee Guetterman (1978-81) in reaching the majors.
Ellard played one season at Liberty in 2021, helping the Flames post a 41-16 record and receive an at-large selection to an NCAA Regional. The left-hander from Roswell, Ga., was named to the 2021 ASUN All-Conference first team after posting a 0-1 record with seven saves and a 3.65 ERA in 26 appearances. Mainly a relief pitcher during his time with the Flames, he struck out 63 and walked 13. He also received 2021 ASUN All-Tournament team honors.
The pitcher was selected in the eighth round of that year's MLB Draft by the Chicago White Sox. This season, he was 2-3 with a 3.76 ERA over 40 2/3 innings in 38 innings for AAA Charlotte before being called up this evening.
