Liberty Set to Compete in 1st ASUN Swimming & Diving Championship Meet
2/20/2024 10:29:00 AM | Women's Swimming & Diving
Liberty aims for its sixth straight conference title, competing at the 2024 Atlantic Sun Women's Swimming & Diving Championship, held Wednesday through Saturday at Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn.
With the CCSA dissolving as a swimming conference after sponsoring swimming & diving since 2007-08, a majority of teams from the CCSA have moved to the ASUN. Liberty won six total CCSA titles, including each of the last five in a row. The seven women's swimming & diving programs in ASUN are Liberty, Bellarmine, FGCU, Gardner-Webb, North Florida, Queens and UNC Asheville. Men's swimming & diving includes Bellarmine, FAU, Gardner-Webb, Old Dominion, Queens and SMU.
This will mark the fourth time that Liberty has competed in a conference meet held in Knoxville. The Lady Flames claimed their first-ever CCSA title in 2014 at Jones Aquatic Center, while Liberty won CCSA Championship in Knoxville in 2020 and again last season. All three times Tennessee hosted the CCSA meet, Liberty earned the title.
As in the last two CCSA Championships, the 2024 ASUN Swimming & Diving Championships will feature four full days of action. Previously, the opening day would feature one diving event and two relays.
How to Follow the Lady Flames
Live results will be available for all events at the 2024 CCSA Swimming & Diving Championships. Also, live video streaming will be available through ESPN+. Fans can receive X updates by following @LibertyFlames and @LibertyDiveSwim.
In a meet where three different teams (Liberty, James Madison, Queens) held leads, Liberty pulled away to win the 2023 CCSA Women's Swimming & Diving Championship. The Lady Flames scored 1,441.5 points, defeating second-place James Madison by 102.5 points.
With the departure of Georgia Southern, James Madison and Old Dominion to the Sun Belt and Campbell to the CAA, there remain three schools (Liberty, FGCU and UNC Asheville) who will have divers competing in the ASUN Championships.
Liberty (2014, 2019, 2020, 2021(t), 2022, 2023) and FGCU (2009-13, 2015-18, 2021 (t)) combined to win the CCSA Championship 15 out of 16 years of conference history. The Eagles and Lady Flames finished 1-2 in some order 11 years in a row prior to James Madison's runner-up finish last year.
14th-year Head Coach Jake Shellenberger has led the Lady Flames from the program's inception. He has posted a 129-38 dual-meet record, being named CCSA Women's Swimming Coach of the Year five times (2012, 2014, 2019, 2022, 2023).
Last year at the CCSA Championships, the Lady Flames registered 22 podium finishes and five event victories, to go along with six NCAA B cuts, three NCAA Zone Qualifying scores and one program record.
Liberty has had several divers earn NCAA Zone Qualifying standards this season, in Maddie Freece (one-meter), Mary Herndon (one-meter, three-meter), Chloe LaCount (three-meter), Caroline Stamps (one-meter) and Meagan Tuohy (one-meter, three-meter).
A total of nine current Lady Flames have posted CCSA podium finishes in their career, led by five from both Maddie Freece and Abbie Shaw. Genna Joyce (3), Sydney Stricklin (3), Abby Strohmeier (3), Heather Gardner (2), Grace Isaacs (2), Shelby Kahn (2) and Isabelle Gomez (1) have all podiumed as well.
Current Lady Flame with Program Records
200 Freestyle – Kamryn Cannings (1:45.67 – 11/18/23)
50 Backstroke – Abbie Shaw (24.34 – L – 2/15/23)
One-meter diving (6) – Maddie Freece (320.75 – 2/18/22)
As was the case last year, many records and lifetime-best times should be expected, as the team has aimed to peak at the conference championships.
An event-by-event preview of individual events follows. Please note that the entries listed are those which appear on the pre-scratch psych sheet and are subject to change.
A look at the psych sheet shows that Liberty, FGCU, Queens and UNC Asheville should be top competitors in most events.
According to the conference office, all conference and meet record from the CCSA will carry over to the ASUN.
