LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Lady Flames became Co-Conference USA Regular Season Champions and earned a first-round bye in the CUSA Women's Soccer Championship with a 4-0 triumph at home over Kennesaw State on Friday night. Liberty (14-1-4, 6-1-2 CUSA) finished CUSA play as the second seed for the second consecutive with 20 points. The Owls (3-10-4, 2-4-3) miss the playoffs with nine points.
Halle Engle (12) scored the game-opening goal for the ninth time this season in the 3' minute. Ivy Garner fed a ball to Engle in the 18-yard box with space on the outside and pushed a tough angle shot directly toward the Kennesaw State goalie, Charlee Bernal. Predicting an outside shot, Bernal dove to the right watching the shot pass her left side.
Kennesaw State, fighting to keep their season alive, played solid defense and generated scoring opportunities that the Lady Flames back line shut down before a threat was formed.
Ivy Garner (8) nailed a long strike off her left foot from deep outside the 18-yard box. Ivy played a throw-in from Sallie Garner and saw an opening with Bernal's positioning, sending it just under the crossbar.
Lysie Findley earned her first career goal by being in the right place at the right time. The redshirt junior deposited a rebound off Avery Paulson's shot on the doorstep that was initially saved by Bernal.
Elise Graf also nailed her first goal as a Lady Flame, depositing a penalty kick in the lower-90 of the goal in the 69' minute. Paulson drew the foul that led to the penalty shot.
Liberty advances to the semifinal round of the CUSA Women's Soccer Championship that begins on Nov. 6 in Miami, Fla. The Lady Flames await their opponent for a Friday matchup.
