LYNCHBURG, Va. – For the second time this season, Halle Engle has been named the Conference USA Player of the Week after a two-goal output, the conference announced Tuesday. Engle netted the opening goal in the first 10 minutes and tallied the game-winning score in the final 10 minutes in Sunday's 2-1 triumph over Middle Tennessee.
Engle also received the recognition on Sept. 10., following Engle's two scores to lift the Lady Flames past No. 21 Virginia Tech 2-1 on Sept. 5. She is the only Lady Flame to be named the CUSA Offensive Player of the Week this season.
The Lady Flames receive their eighth CUSA Player of the Week honor, ranking second in the conference.
On Sunday, Engle (11) kicked off the scoring in the 6' minute of the contest on the doorstep of the goal line. Avery Paulson sent in a near cross that was settled by Ivy Garner near the end line. Garner sent a low ball across the 6-yard box that found Engle who tapped the score in.
With under 10 minutes remaining approaching a 1-1 draw, Engle broke the game open with a perfect strike from 20 yards out. In the 82' minute, the forward received a deep ball on the near side of the field and crossed her defender to find space. Engle used her left foot to drive a ball to the near side of the goal that bounced off the bottom of the crossbar to give Liberty the lead.
The redshirt sophomore leads the team and ranks No. 2 in CUSA with 11 goals and No. 3 with 25 points (3 assists). Engle is third in the country with six game-winning goals this season. Liberty is 8-0 when the forward scores the first goal of the contest.
Liberty (13-1-4, 5-1-2 CUSA) prepares for its final regular season contest hosting Kennesaw State (3-9-4, 2-3-3 CUSA) at Osborne Stadium on Friday at 6 p.m. The contest will be streamed on ESPN+. Liberty has clinched a spot in the CUSA Women's Soccer Championship and looks to secure a No. 2 seed and a first-round bye with a triumph on Friday.
