LYNCHBURG, Va. – Host Liberty won nine events on Saturday, the third and final day of competition at the fourth annual Brant Tolsma Invitational. Leading the way were record breakers Omari Lewis (meet-record 6.73 men's 60) and Katie Urbine (Liberty freshman-record 13-7.75 women's pole vault).
Men's athletes accounted for six of the Flames' Saturday victories at the Brant Tolsma Indoor Track at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex, also including Warren Barrett (shot put – 60-8.75), Anthony Bryan (60 hurdles – 8.11), Hunter Flack (pole vault – 15-1), Simon Lamparelli (400 – 48.81) and Brendan Pitcher (800 – 1:52.62).
On the women's side, Indea Cartwright (60 hurdles – 8.36) and Katelyn Locker (800 – 2:12.36) joined Urbine in the win column.
Men's Day 3 Recap
Last season, Lewis posted his first career collegiate victory in the Brant Tolsma Invitational men's 60 dash final, setting a meet record of 6.74 in the process.
Fast forward to Saturday, and Lewis clocked another 6.74 in the prelims before setting a new meet record of 6.73 in the final. His closest competitor was teammate Revell Webster in 6.90, as the Trinidad and Tobago natives swapped places from Webster's narrow victory over Lewis in Friday night's men's 200 final.
Barrett, the reigning CUSA Male Field Athlete of the Week, also successfully defended his title from the 2023 Brant Tolsma Invitational in the men's shot put. The All-American's top mark of 60-8.75 won the competition by nearly 10 feet.
Liberty's most impressive team effort of the day came in the men's 60 hurdles final, where the Flames swept the first five places. The first three finishers set new personal bests, including champion Bryan (8.11), runner-up Albrey Gossett (8.16) and third-place Daniel Van Duren (8.18). Fourth-place Cole Peterlin (8.25), the meet's heptathlon champion, had clocked a personal-best 8.12 in the prelims, while Rayshawn Johnson rounded out the sweep in fifth place (8.38).
The Flames shook up the program's 60 hurdles top 10 list, as Bryan now ranks No. 7, Peterlin No. 8 and Gossett No. 10.
The last time Pitcher ran an 800 at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex, he took home the 2023 ASUN title. He finished first in the four-lap race again on Saturday, edging out teammate Isaiah Schulties, 1:52.62 to 1:52.93.
Freshman Simon Lamparelli had a tight finish of his own, claiming his first collegiate victory in the 400 by outleaning William & Mary's Austin Rice, 48.81 to 48.85.
Flack made it over a season-best 15-1 to give the home team a sweep of the day's men's and women's pole vault victories.
Jacob Hess placed a team-best third in 4:18.41 in the men's mile, one of the day's most exciting races. But he was only the second Hess to cross the finish line as younger brother Jonathan took the victory in 4:18.02.
Women's Day 3 Recap
Urbine set a Liberty freshman record in the women's pole vault for the third consecutive meet to start her career, but this was the first time it resulted in a first-place finish. Her second-attempt clearance at 13-7.75 blew her 13-0.25 from last Saturday's Virginia Tech Invitational out of the water, moving Urbine into second place all-time for the Lady Flames.
The Pennsylvania native then took three shots at 14-0, which would have broken the program record by a centimeter. But Liberty Athletic Hall of Famer Andrea Wildrick's mark from 2002 lives to see another day.
Liberty's record holder in the women's 60 hurdles, Cartwright dominated the event final on Saturday with an 8.36 clocking.
Running her first 800 in a Liberty uniform, Locker clocked 2:12.36 to lead a 1-2 finish with redshirt freshman teammate Katrina Schlenker (2:15.29). Locker, a transfer from Monmouth, joined the Lady Flames' all-time top 10 list at No. 9.
Defending ASUN women's shot put champion Megan Mann nearly claimed victory in the event on Saturday. But VCU's Eryn Byrd overtook her by 3.25 inches in round six, relegating Mann to the runner-up spot with a season-best mark of 48-0.
