NEW YORK, N.Y. – Indea Cartwright punctuated a strong Friday by Liberty's hurdlers at the Dr. Sander Invitational/Columbia Challenge, finishing second in the women's 60 hurdles final. Albrey Gossett also excelled on day one at The Armory, setting two personal bests on his way to seventh in the men's 60 hurdles final.
Through the first day of competition at this team-scored meet, the Lady Flames sit 12th in the women's team standings with eight points. Meanwhile, the Flames are tied with the Saint Peter's men's squad for 13th place with two points.
Cartwright reached the women's 60 hurdles finish line in 8.30, just edging North Carolina A&T's Lucheyona Weaver by five thousandths of a second for the runner-up position. Cartwright has now posted two first-place finishes and a pair of second-place showings in four women's 60 hurdles competitions this season.
Gossett continued an impressive string of personal-best performances in the men's 60 hurdles during his first season as a Flame. After posting a top clocking of 8.30 during his time at Coastal Carolina, Gossett has now improved that mark six times during his first four meets at Liberty.
Gossett's times as a Flame have gone from 8.26 to 8.24 to 8.19 to 8.16 to 8.08 to 8.06. The last two of those efforts were achieved during Friday's prelims and final, respectively. The 8.06 posting earned Gossett a seventh-place finish in the event and the No. 5 spot on the Flames' all-time chart.
Two other non-finalists also achieved notable hurdles times for Liberty on Friday. Ahvon Mitchell's season-best 8.57 clocking in the women's 60 hurdles prelims left her just one spot out of the final. But it did move the first-year Lady Flame up to No. 4 in program history.
Rayshawn Johnson also slashed his personal best to 8.30 in the men's 60 hurdles prelims.
Michael Ilesanmi, a former teammate of Johnson's when both competed for Saint Peter's, paced the Flames' field event competitors on the day. He long jumped a season-best 22-1.5 for 17th place.
