
ODU Edges Liberty 3-2 in Back-and-Forth Battle

NORFOLK, Va. - The host Old Dominion Monarchs battled back from a 2-1 deficit to earn a 3-2 (22-25, 25-19, 15-25, 25-22, 15-10) win over Liberty, Tuesday at ODU Volleyball Center.
The Monarchs improved to 8-6 on the season with their fourth win in their last five matches. Liberty (7-5) sustained its fifth straight setback following a 7-0 start to the 2023 campaign.
Notable Numbers
Liberty will have this weekend off from competition and will begin its inaugural season of Conference USA play next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29-30, at Middle Tennessee.

Notable Numbers
- For the match, Liberty outhit ODU .178-.155. The Lady Flames also led in kills (60-53), assists (57-51) and digs (51-47) Both teams posted 13 blocks, while Old Dominion held a 10-5 advantage in aces.
- Myah Conway led ODU with 16 kills and added five blocks, while Alice Munari chipped in while 11 kills. Teresa Atilano dished out 43 assists to go along with 10 digs, four aces and five blocks. Kate Kilpatrick collected 12 digs, while Bailey Burgess posted six blocks.
- Kate Phillips scored a match-high 19 kills for the Lady Flames, while Sydney Whitfield posted her first career double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs to go along with four blocks. Charli Morris contributed a career-high 28 assists, while Delaney Dilfer dished out 22 assists. Kate Curtis collected a season-high 12 digs, while Madison Blane posted a match-high eight blocks and Julia Mangum scored nine kills.
- The teams traded momentum all night. With the match tied at 1-1, Liberty converted at a .500 clip to win the third set, 25-15.
- The Lady Flames appeared poised to close out the match, leading set four 22-20 after back-to-back kills from Mangum and Ananda Patterson. ODU scored the next five points, a rally sparked by a Munari kill, to take the fourth set, 25-22.
- The Monarchs burst out to a 13-5 lead in the fifth before the Lady Flames rallied back to within 13-9. However, ODU sided out on Liberty's next two serves to seal the set and match.
- Old Dominion is 2-0 all-time against Liberty in volleyball. ODU won the only previous meeting, 3-0, on Sept. 10, 2021 in Lynchburg. No current Lady Flames on the 2023 team competed in that match.
- Whitfield registered career highs in both kills and digs, becoming the first Liberty freshman since Kate Phillips in 2021 to record a double-double.
- Liberty is 2-1 in five-set matches this season, while ODU is 3-2 in five-set contests. The Lady Flames had won each of their last five five-set matches entering tonight, dating back to last season.
