LYNCHBURG, Va. - The UMBC Retrievers broke open a tightly contested game with two goals midway through the second half to defeat the Liberty Flames 3-0 on Friday evening at Retrievers Soccer Park.
Having problems solving the Liberty pressuring attack throughout the first 70 minutes, UMBC scored two goals during a 2:27 span to take control of the match. Midfielder Will Forby scored on a free kick just outside the 18-yard box at 71:12 to make it 2-0 and forward Taylor Calheira scored unassisted less than three minutes later to give the host Retrievers a two-goal cushion.
Liberty led UMBC in shots, 15-9, but was kept off the scoreboard by several outstanding saves by Retrievers goalkeeper Jailon Gillespie.
Liberty drops from the ranks of the unbeaten, falling to 2-1 on the year. UMBC moves to 2-0-1 on the year.
