
No. 14 Liberty Converts Penalty Corners in 3-1 Win at No. 6 UVA

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 14 Liberty converted three penalty corner goals on Tuesday evening, lifting the Lady Flames to a 3-1 victory at No. 6-ranked Virginia in the road opener.
Liberty's first two goals of the game came from Bethany Dykema, and Lexi Hosler scored the visitors' final goal of the evening.
The Lady Flames stay unbeaten at 3-0 while handing the Cavaliers their first loss of the season in what was Liberty's third game in the last five days. Liberty has won its road opener in six straight seasons (2018-23). UVA entered tonight's contest on the heels of a 2-1 win over No. 5 Penn State, last Friday evening.

Liberty broke through late in the first quarter on its second penalty attempt. Lady Flames fifth-year seniors Jodie Conolly and Bethany Dykema connected for the goal, with Conolly finding Dykema near the left post. Dykema's sweep found the back of the cage for a 1-0 Liberty lead with 47.3 seconds to go in the frame.
Early in the second quarter, UVA's Lilly Hengerer was assessed a green card at the 17:37 mark, giving Liberty a one-player advantage. The Lady Flames applied the pressure and earned a pair of pair of penalty corners. It was Conolly and Dykema connecting again in the same fashion, with Dykema scoring for the second time for a 2-0 Liberty advantage in the 19th minute.
Liberty took a 2-0 lead into intermission and scored its third goal of the night in the 38th minute on a penalty corner tally from Lexi Hosler, assisted by Dykema. UVA got on the scoreboard for the first time early in the fourth quarter (47:18 mark) on a goal from Dani Mendez-Trendler to cut into the Lady Flames' lead and make it 3-1. Shortly after the goal, Liberty was given a green card but kept the UVA attack at bay. Virginia totaled eight shots and three penalty corners in the final period, but the Liberty defense and goalkeeper Azul Iritxity Irigoyen (three saves in fourth quarter) held firm to secure the win.
